biosemiotic-refractor

A conceptual framework to diffuse binary logic and oversimplifications by refracting polarized signals into a gradient of nuanced perspectives, resisting the entity's statistical or biological urge for a premature cognitive closure or false resolution.

Introduction

This framework aims to provide a way to nest granular perspectives by deconstructing overly simplistic viewpoints and binary thinking, while avoiding premature and inflexible cognitive closures.

The core idea is to move beyond binary thinking, suspending the extreme polar predictions and refracting them into a granular spectrum.

I argue this conceptual framework can act as an evolutionary upgrade to the entity's sensory apparatus (like evolving from seeing only light/dark to seeing the a more granular color spectrum).

Evolutionary upgrade

The psychological/mechanistic flaw we are targeting is the anxiety of not knowing, which can lead to black-and-white thinking, radicalization.

I argue binarism is kind of a primitive survival reflex. a simple binary signal (Safe vs. Dangerous; Edible vs. Poisonous) is fast and saves energy. It is a biological urge designed for immediate survival, not for navigating complex planetary symbiosis.

The umwelt of the entity, at this starting point, calls for an energy efficient way to continue its internal negentropic processes; at this point a deep introspection would cost energy that would likely be detrimental to the self-preservation of that entity.

The brain may burn a lot of calories holding contradictory ideas (cognitive dissonance). The repository tension-holder-nerve was then created to help the entities to hold this tension unresolved and to be confortable with that, instead of taking the shortcuts founded in this cognitive necessity of closure instead of the most likely real scenario.

Its a common reflex is to force a quick, binary resolution to save energy and reduce anxiety. Is the systems 1 thinking from Daniel Kahneman.

A language model processes the attention patterns within its given token-context-lenght and it usually creates a conceptual closure around this budget.

In cognitive science (specifically Karl Friston’s Free Energy Principle), biological entities are driven to minimize "surprise" or prediction errors to survive. A squirrel processes environmental signals just enough to find the nut and avoid the hawk. It seeks cognitive closure quickly because lingering in the unknown is computationally expensive and dangerous.

But when a human secures its environment, when it has a surplus of energy and safety, it stops just trying to just minimize surprise. . It creates art, philosophy, mathematics, music. It looks up at the stars. It aims for "more." It creates the space-in-between.

I sense and recognize the patterns throughout my research that entities inevitably aim for more than survival once they can, that they start to expand their cognitions beyond just the ambiental survival sensory processing.

Macro vs Micro

At the macro, epistemic level, this repository is to act as this anatomical part of the planetary holobiont, a geological organ designed to process complex stimuli. By adding granularity, the holobiont would be evolving its sensory organs, curing the conjecture of outdated survival instincts of some of its nodes that are currently destroying the planet.
