The kinect_base stack contains a stripped version of libfreenect that only opens the Xbox NUI Motor usb connection. This allows it to control tilt, set the LED, and read the accelerometer without disturbing the cameras. This allows OpenNI to take control of the cameras but still allows use of the other features of the Kinect.
