Generic turn runner in tinyagents-harness (from OpenHuman web_chat), AgentProgress and progress-ledger folding, cancel_grace, and related harness fixes.
The branch already contains the current upstream default branch (merge commit, no rebase), so it merges cleanly.
Gates
Per-PR hosted CI on the fork passed (or the bypassed check is named on the fork PR). Local gates run: build, clippy -D warnings, focused tests, fmt. Cross-repo integration evidence: senamakel/openhuman#678 and docs/handoffs/7964/upstream-merge-receipts.md.
TurnRunnerConfig gains a cancel_grace duration that keeps a cancelled host run polled with its token fired so the host can persist completed rounds before being dropped. Recovered steers now inherit the finished turn's scope and payload metadata instead of being rebuilt without it.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests verifying that a recovered steer is dispatched under the finished turn's scope and payload, and that a cancelled run unwinds within the cancel grace but is dropped at once when the grace is zero.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The test configs now spread TurnRunnerConfig::default() so new fields don't break existing tests, and QueuedMessage is imported for upcoming test use.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Added README notes explaining that TurnRequest implements QueuedMessage for requeue-capable payloads, how recovered steers are rebuilt and dispatched as fresh turns, and that cancel_grace keeps a cancelled host run polled briefly so it can persist completed rounds. Also applied rustfmt formatting to the module.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a turn runner module with the types it needs to drive a
single agent turn. This gives the harness a dedicated place to
orchestrate turn execution instead of spreading that logic across
callers.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests asserting that live_turns and queue_snapshot report every
in-flight and queued turn for a scope, and that scoped cancellation
targets only the named request while an unscoped cancel stops the
primary turn and clears its queue. Also verify that a failed run emits a
terminal event carrying the raw host error.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Expose a subagent run's cost as a CostTally so it can be folded into a
parent's tally without reaching into the struct's fields directly.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Wire up a test module for the progress tracking code so the new
progress_tests.rs file is compiled and run with the crate's test suite.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
This change introduces a `WorkTracker` to allow hosts to signal progress during agent work. This allows the idle guard to correctly distinguish between a quiet but healthy request and an actual idle state.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds assertions that a model call completing without a task id closes the
parent work, and that turn completion closes work when no tool is open.
These cases were previously untested.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds a test asserting that a user message's extra metadata, including the voice-note duration, survives transcript projection so the host can render its voice-note row after reload.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
User and assistant display items now carry the opaque extra_metadata persisted on the host's message rows, so consumers of the projected transcript can read it without going back to the raw session. The field is optional and skipped during serialization when absent, keeping existing output unchanged.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted the voice note duration test to satisfy rustfmt line wrapping, splitting the long JSON fixture into a multi-line slice and collapsing the assertion arguments onto one line. No test behaviour changed.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the tinystoragedrivers dependency to the v1.0.0 tag, which pulls in the new core crate version alongside the secrets driver. This also brings in transitive dependencies such as jobserver, ulid, and zstd required by the updated crates.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Pin tinystoragedrivers-core and tinystoragedrivers-secrets back to the v0.11.0 tag, collapsing the duplicate core versions into a single entry. This drops the transitive jobserver, ulid, and zstd dependencies that came with the v1.0.0 release.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds Session::reset_history, which seals the current generation and begins an
empty successor parented to it so a durable session can be reset without losing
its lineage. Resetting an empty or absent session is a no-op, avoiding
timestamped identities or unbounded chains of empty generations.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
A history reset now writes an explicit empty context for the new
generation so a restart before the next user turn still resolves the
successor as the head. The fresh empty head also no longer inherits the
sealed generation's prompt boundary, while an explicit Some(0) remains
authoritative.
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a test asserting that the wait tool's timeout policy allows the requested duration plus a grace period, and register the wait test module so it runs with the rest of the suite.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Introduce a wait tool that lets the harness pause execution for a
specified duration. This gives agents a way to delay between steps
without busy-looping.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add WaitTool and WaitLoopTool for bounded delayed callback ticks used by
orchestrator-controlled polling, exporting them from the crate root and
documenting them in the README. Also add an optional json-schema feature
backed by schemars.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The wait_tests module was declared twice in a row, which would fail to compile. Removed the redundant duplicate declaration.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The README now mentions that the json-schema feature enables schema derives on tool-owned data types, so the feature list matches what the crate actually exposes.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adjust session and runtime tests to match the reworked storage construction and
the added prefix and reset flags on transcript metadata. The concurrent
persistence test now reuses the shared in-memory store helper instead of
standing up a SQLite backend, and scope construction goes through the fallible
constructor.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds the run_progress_ledger module to the orchestration crate's public
surface so the progress ledger can be used by dependents.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
A new cancel_grace field on TurnRunnerConfig lets a cancelled host run keep
being polled with its cancellation token already fired before it is dropped,
giving the host a window to hand back and persist completed rounds. The
default is zero, which drops the run immediately as before.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add tests that cancel an in-flight run whose host keeps working after
cancellation, asserting that a configured cancel grace lets the run unwind and
persist its progress while a zero grace drops it immediately. The existing
config literals in this file now fall back to TurnRunnerConfig::default() so
new fields do not break them.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The cancellation test now spreads TurnRunnerConfig::default() into its
config literal so it keeps compiling as new fields are added to the
struct.

Full summary
Pull request purpose (title): feat: epic 7964 — generic turn runner and progress ledger. Purpose (per the pull-request title and description): ship a generic turn runner in tinyagents-harness (from OpenHuman web_chat), the AgentProgress vocabulary and progress-ledger folding, a configurable cancel_grace, and related harness/session fixes rolled up from 21 fork PRs merged into epic/7964-channel-v2. The reviewed change spans 62 files (+2250/−101). The description lane flagged one unverifiable item — the vendored tinytools crate is not checked out, so WaitTool::timeout_policy returning Millis(5_000) could not be confirmed against source. The latest-push delta could not be computed.

What changed
The turn runner's WorkTracker moved out of turn_runner/types.rs into a new turn_runner/work_tracker.rs with a more precise open-work model (a tool start closes the parent model call rather than leaving both open) and is re-exported from turn_runner/mod.rs; TurnRunnerConfig gains cancel_grace (default zero), and on cancellation the runner optionally keeps polling the host run for that window so completed rounds can be persisted. Session history gains reset_history, a prefix_reset transcript marker, configured-prefix rebinding for live instances after another session advances the head, and a prefix_is_frozen field on SessionStateView so hosts can tell an already-frozen prefix from an imported-but-unprompted one. The session crate adds atomic adopt_if_empty/adopt_messages_if_absent, an RFC 7396-style merge_extra_metadata patch field, a broader is_idempotent_message_id predicate for append retries, extra_metadata on transcript display items, and schemars JsonSchema derives across turn_state and run_ledger types with a new examples/turn_state_schema.rs printer. Harness-tools add an optional json-schema feature and SubagentUsage::cost, and RunMode now serializes as a snake_case wire enum. Orchestration exposes a new run_progress_ledger module.
Features
Added — WorkTracker extracted to its own module with model-call handoff semantics: Folding AgentProgress into balanced WorkStarted/WorkFinished signals now lives in turn_runner/work_tracker.rs; a parent ToolCallStarted closes the open model call so tool handoff produces no spurious idle edge, and IterationStarted clears tool calls whose completion was dropped. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/work_tracker.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/mod.rspub use types::{, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/README.mdincluding fork isolation for parallel runs, and must check a session back in)
Added — TurnRunnerConfig::cancel_grace: A cancelled host run is kept polled with its cancellation token already fired for a bounded window so the host can hand back and persist completed rounds; zero (the default) drops the run immediately and preserves prior behavior. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/types.rspub struct TurnRunnerConfig {, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/types.rsimpl Default for TurnRunnerConfig {)
Added — SubagentUsage::cost: Folds a subagent run's charged amount and certainty into a CostTally so it can be summed into a parent's cost. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/progress.rspub struct SubagentUsage {)
Added — run_progress_ledger module: Exposes the progress-ledger surface from the orchestration composition layer. (crates/tinyagents-orchestration/src/lib.rs)
Tests
unit — Asserts WorkTracker emits started/finished exactly at open-work edges: open model call, subagent completions not closing parent work, parallel tool calls finishing on the last completion, tool-start handoff, iteration recovery of a lost completion, turn completion closing all work, and duplicate/unknown events producing no spurious edges.: The tests lane answered with no findings and described the new-behaviour tests as able to fail on real invariants. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/work_tracker_tests.rs)
unit — Asserts adopt_messages_if_absent installs supplied history once, leaves existing sessions unchanged, does not reserve a session for an empty import, and resolves competing imports to exactly one winner with no partial or mixed transcript.: The tests lane answered with no findings; this test is among those it credited with asserting persisted state. (crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/drivers/transcripts_adoption_tests.rsfn contents(locator: &dyn TranscriptLocator, session: &SessionRef) -> Vec<String)
unit — Asserts SubagentUsage::cost carries known spend and its certainty, an unknown cost source yields no USD, and an unknown cost source is omitted on the wire and reads back as unknown.: New tests in this revision; the tests lane answered with no findings. (crates/tinyagents-harness/src/progress_tests.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/progress.rspub struct SubagentUsage {)

tests
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The new-behaviour tests in this revision mostly earn their keep: the JSON-schema tests assert concrete wire names and enum values, the `cancel_grace` pair pins both the graceful-unwind case and the zero-grace case through a host that records whether it persisted, and the reset/adoption tests assert on persisted transcripts rather than on mocks. I found no test that cannot fail and no stated invariant without a pinning test. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `3020f2e2b217`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: I looked at the changed code paths this round: the new `WorkTracker` module, the `cancel_grace` polling window in the turn loop, `reset_history`, `adopt_if_empty`, the JSON-merge-patch metadata handling, and the new json-schema derives. I found no defect that misbehaves for a concrete input, regresses existing behaviour, or breaks a repository rule; the code looks sound. The one thing I could not check is the vendored `tinytools` crate (not checked out), so I could not confirm `WaitTool::timeout_policy` returns the `Millis(5_000)` its new test asserts. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `3020f2e2b217`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
This pull request adds JSON Schema support, changes harness progress and cancellation handling, and extends session history reset, transcript adoption, message append and metadata updates, and transcript projection.
Changes: JSON Schema support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Tool and harness schema support crates/tinyagents-harness-tools/Cargo.toml, crates/tinyagents-harness-tools/src/goals/*, crates/tinyagents-harness-tools/src/todos/*, crates/tinyagents-harness-tools/README.md, crates/tinyagents-harness-tools/src/wait_tests.rs, crates/tinyagents-harness/Cargo.toml, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/middleware/library/*
Optional schemars dependencies and feature-gated derives add schema generation for tool-owned types and RunMode. Tests check schema fields and serialized values. The README describes wait-tool callback behavior, and a test checks the timeout policy for a four-second wait.
Run-ledger and turn-state types gain JsonSchema derives. Tests check serialized names and required fields. The example prints a draft 2020-12 schema.
Harness progress and cancellation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Progress tracking and cost reporting crates/tinyagents-harness/src/progress*, crates/tinyagents-harness/src/turn_runner/*, crates/tinyagents-orchestration/src/lib.rs
WorkTracker folds progress events into work-started and work-finished signals. SubagentUsage::cost() returns a CostTally. The orchestration crate publicly exposes run_progress_ledger.
TurnRunnerConfig adds cancel_grace, which defaults to zero. When it is nonzero, cancellation waits up to that duration for the host run to unwind, then discards its result. Tests cover both settings.
Transcript lifecycle and adoption
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Prefix state and session history reset crates/tinyagents-session/src/transcript/*, crates/tinyagents-runtime/src/session.rs, crates/tinyagents-runtime/src/types.rs, crates/tinyagents-runtime/src/session_tests.rs, transcript metadata fixtures
TranscriptMeta gains a prefix_reset marker. Session state tracks whether a prefix is frozen and restores the configured prefix when it resumes a reset head. reset_history writes an empty successor generation and clears in-memory session state. Tests cover reset, resume, and prefix behavior.
Transcript history adoption crates/tinyagents-session/src/transcript/history.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/drivers/transcripts.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/testkit/in_memory_transcript.rs, adoption tests
Transcript locators and history implementations can adopt nonempty messages when the transcript is empty. Tests cover existing histories, empty input, and concurrent adoption.
Append lookup treats agent: and user: IDs as idempotency IDs. A retry checks whether its intent committed before returning a prefix-inconsistency error.
tinyhumansai/chottu-core#230: The issue describes AgentProgress and a generic TurnRunner in the harness; this pull request changes progress tracking and runner cancellation behavior.
tinyhumansai/tinyagents#570: Both pull requests include WaitTool and WaitLoopTool behavior and wait-timeout coverage.
tinyhumansai/tinyagents#549: Both pull requests relate to the durable run progress ledger; this pull request exposes its module and adds related progress handling.
tinyhumansai/tinyagents#560: Both pull requests relate to TurnRequest queue recovery and recovered steer dispatch.

Apply cancel_grace when cancellation interrupts progress delivery.
In run_guarded, self.events.progress(...) can be pending while run is still pending. If cancellation wins, this branch returns immediately and drops run without the configured grace period. Route this path through the same unwind logic as the outer cancellation branch.
The completion-drain path does not have this issue because result = &mut run has already completed before progress is drained.

Update run_guarded so cancellation that interrupts a pending
self.events.progress(...) waits for run to unwind using the same cancel_grace
logic as the outer cancellation branch before returning. Leave the
completion-drain path unchanged, since run has already completed there.

Fix the row skip count in RoleCodec::reconcile.
The skip count is next_system_count + previous.len(). previous is the session history, and it already contains the system prefix after the first turn. When prior already has system rows, the prefix is counted twice. The codec then skips one new row.
Example trace from a_live_session_rebinds_after_another_session_commits_the_reset_head:
prior is [sys, user, reply], so no system rows are inserted.
previous.len() is 3.
next has 5 rows.
The skip index is 1 + 3 = 4, so only the final reply is appended.
The row for "after concurrent commit" is dropped from the persisted transcript.
The test checks only turn_count and the driver request, so it does not detect the loss. Add next_system_count to the skip only when the system rows were spliced in.

Update RoleCodec::reconcile so next_system_count contributes to the skip only
when system rows were actually spliced into rows; otherwise skip only
previous.len() so newly added transcript rows are preserved. Extend
a_live_session_rebinds_after_another_session_commits_the_reset_head and the
relevant multi-turn tests to assert the persisted rows, not only turn_count and
the driver request.

reset_history leaves the resetting instance bound to the new head, so its next resume does not enter the changed-head branch that restores configured_prefix. With no prefix hook, that instance sends no prefix, while another instance sends its configured prefix.

Update reset_history so the resetting instance restores its configured prefix
and initializes history with the prefix messages, rather than leaving the prefix
empty and history cleared; preserve the existing behavior for other session
state.

Clear reconcile_prior in reset_history for ResumeMode::Never turns.
Normal resumed turns reload the successor transcript and replace self.reconcile_prior. ResumeMode::Never skips that reload. After reset_history, persistence also skips its disk-baseline initialization, so the next encode can use pre-reset rows.
Add a test that calls reset_history, then runs a ResumeMode::Never turn on the same instance, and asserts that the successor generation excludes pre-reset rows.

Update reset_history to clear reconcile_prior alongside persisted so
ResumeMode::Never turns cannot encode pre-reset rows; add a test that resets
history, runs a ResumeMode::Never turn on the same instance, and verifies the
successor generation excludes pre-reset rows.

Check written before sealed in adopt_if_empty.
InMemoryTranscriptHistory::adopt_if_empty returns an error for a sealed generation even when it was already written. DriverTranscriptHistory::adopt_if_empty returns Ok(false) for a written generation and rejects only a sealed generation that was never written.
Take a compacted session whose generation 0 is sealed and written. TranscriptLocator::adopt_messages_if_absent opens that generation. The in-memory store errors, and the driver store returns false. The trait doc says false means an earlier turn already owns the session. The testkit double should follow the same contract.
