What does this PR do?

prompt takes explicit input and output descriptors and uses the NIO bootstrap only when isEpollRegisterable returns true for both. On Linux that function creates an epoll fd, attempts EPOLL_CTL_ADD with EPOLLERR|EPOLLHUP (Glibc enum raw values, Musl integer constants), and takes the direct path only for EPERM; a failed epoll_create1 stays on the NIO path, and non-Linux builds always do. The direct path writes the message with FileDescriptor.writeAll and reads the reply on a detached task, appending 256-byte reads until a newline or EOF. A NIO write that throws ChannelError.ioOnClosedChannel writes the prompt on the raw output descriptor instead, and the new ConsoleTests cover a normal line, EOF with and without a partial line, a line longer than the 256-byte buffer, pipes and /dev/null, and the Linux epoll preflight.

An interactive prompt aborts the process with a SwiftNIO fatal error when stdout is /dev/null, before xtool does any work. The prompt that hits this is the Xcode .xip path question in xtool dev build when the SDK is not installed yet. Terminals, pipes, regular files, and ptys all complete that same prompt. Console.prompt always duplicated standard input and output into NIOPipeBootstrap, which registers those descriptors with epoll. Linux epoll_ctl returns EPERM for /dev/null, and SwiftNIO turns that failure into a fatal error. isatty and poll still leave /dev/null on the NIO path: other non-ttys already succeed there, and poll reports /dev/null as ready.

Fixes #268

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Console prompts now handle input and output descriptors that cannot be registered with the event system, including terminal and pipe scenarios.
    • Prompts can still display their message if the event-driven output channel is closed.
    • Input reading supports partial lines, end-of-file, and lines longer than the read buffer.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for prompt input and output, including descriptor registration behavior and longer input lines.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Console prompt now accepts explicit input and output descriptors. It uses NIO when both descriptors are epoll-registerable and otherwise reads and writes directly. Tests cover pipes, /dev/null, EOF, and long input.

The NIO prompt writes directly to the output descriptor if its channel is closed. The fallback writes to the output descriptor, then reads in 256-byte chunks until newline or EOF. Tests cover complete, partial, empty, and 1,000-character input.

The fix for /dev/null stdout looks sound. Two open concerns remain: duplicated descriptors may leak on setup failure, and when several lines arrive in one read, later prompts may lose input. Resolve or confirm both before merging.

Assert the prompt written to the output pipe.

testPromptReadsLineFromPipes passes "prompt: " to Console.prompt but checks only the returned input. If the implementation stops writing the prompt or sends it elsewhere, the call can still return "hello" and pass. Read the pipe after closing its write end and assert it contains "prompt: "; no other prompt test checks emitted output.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Close duplicated descriptors when setup fails.

If the output duplication throws, the input duplicate remains open. If NIOPipeBootstrap.takingOwnershipOfDescriptors fails, SwiftNIO leaves ownership of both duplicates with this function, but this function does not close them. Keep the duplicates as FileDescriptor values and close any descriptors that NIO did not take. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings, bare duplicated descriptor integers need explicit cleanup on failure paths.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve input after the first newline.

If one 256-byte read returns "first\nsecond\n", readLine(from:) returns "first" and discards "second\n". A second prompt on the same input descriptor then returns an empty string at EOF or waits for more input. Retain unread bytes for the next prompt, or read only through the newline. The Glibc and Musl modules do not export <sys/epoll.h>, so
epoll_create1, epoll_event and EPOLL_* were out of scope and
build-linux failed to compile Console.swift. isEpollRegisterable now
uses fstat: regular files, directories and non-tty character devices
such as /dev/null report false (epoll_ctl returns EPERM for them);
pipes, sockets and ttys report true.

Independent check of isEpollRegisterable's classification

The fstat switch is the whole basis of the gate, so I checked the kernel side directly instead of reasoning about it. EPOLL_CTL_ADD per descriptor type, on Linux 7.2.5:

/dev/null      (S_IFCHR, not a tty)   -> EPERM (errno 1)
/dev/zero      (S_IFCHR, not a tty)   -> EPERM (errno 1)
regular file   (S_IFREG)              -> EPERM (errno 1)
pipe           (S_IFIFO)              -> OK
pty            (S_IFCHR, isatty)      -> OK

That lines up with the switch case for case: 0o100000/0o040000 -> false, 0o020000 -> isatty, otherwise true. So the gate classifies descriptors the way this kernel actually answers, which is the property that matters here.

(That is the kernel's answer for a descriptor registered directly. Whether any given stdio configuration ever reaches that registration is a separate question.)

Separately, I reproduced the crash from a second entry point: xtool new with no project name, stdin on /dev/null and stdout on a pipe, traps deterministically at SIGILL, exit 132. Full table in #268. It goes through the same Console.prompt, so this PR's gate should cover it.

What I have not done is exercise the fixed build end to end — I do not have a working SwiftPM build of this package in this environment, so swift test on the branch is still the missing signal before merge. This is a check of the classification, and of the crash's reachability, not of the fix's runtime behaviour.
