Resolves #365.

Adds xtool update:

  • xtool update finds the latest stable release on GitHub, downloads it, verifies the SHA-256 digest GitHub publishes for the asset, and atomically replaces the executable.
  • --check only reports whether a newer version exists.
  • --force reinstalls the current version; --pre-release includes pre-releases.

Self-update is supported for Linux AppImage installs (x86_64/aarch64, located via $APPIMAGE). Other setups are pointed to the releases page / their package manager. A failed download or permission error leaves the existing install untouched.

Adds unit tests for version parsing/comparison. Note: I couldn't build locally (no Swift toolchain on my machine), so CI is the first compile.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added xtool update to check for and install eligible releases, with options to force an update or include pre-releases.
    • Update checks can report available releases without installing them. Linux AppImage installations can be updated directly, and downloads are verified when a checksum is published.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Version comparisons treat missing components as zero.
  • Documentation
    • Added Linux update instructions, including guidance for package-manager installations.

Walkthrough

Adds xtool update to check GitHub releases and install an update. The command supports --check, --force, and --pre-release. Automatic installation supports Linux AppImages.

Changes: CLI update command

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command entry and options
Package.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/XTool.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/UpdateCommand.swift
Adds the Crypto dependency, registers UpdateCommand, and defines its options. The command reports versions, supports check-only mode, and skips installation when the current version is not older unless forced.
Release lookup and version checks
Sources/XToolSupport/UpdateCommand.swift, Tests/XToolTests/UpdateTests.swift
Fetches eligible GitHub releases and compares dotted numeric versions, treating missing components as zero. Tests cover version parsing and comparison.
Linux asset selection and installation
Sources/XToolSupport/UpdateCommand.swift, Documentation/xtool.docc/Installation-Linux.md
Selects Linux x86_64 or arm64 assets and requires a non-empty APPIMAGE path. Downloads are checked against a published SHA-256 digest when available. Installation stages the executable, sets its permissions, and replaces the target. The Linux guide describes AppImage updates and package-manager updates.

Explanation

[#365] UpdateCommand is registered and implements update, --check, --force, and --pre-release. It fetches GitHub releases, filters drafts and stable releases, compares numeric versions, selects Linux AppImage assets by architecture, verifies published SHA-256 digests, and atomically replaces the executable. The check branch returns before installation, including when combined with --force. Unsupported installations receive package-manager or release-page guidance. The install path changes only the executable, and version parsing and comparison tests are present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#365]. UpdateCommand.swift and its registration implement the updater. Package.swift adds the checksum dependency. UpdateTests.swift tests updater version logic. The Linux installation documentation describes the supported update paths. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

Minor · Compare pre-release versions using SemVer precedence. · UpdateCommand.swift:129-137

Sources/XToolSupport/UpdateCommand.swift:129-137
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare pre-release versions using SemVer precedence.

--pre-release can select 1.2.4-rc.1, but isNewer rejects its suffix and returns false. The normal update and --check paths can therefore skip an available pre-release. This affects only the explicit pre-release mode, and users can recover by running xtool update --pre-release --force, so this is a minor issue.

Compare the numeric core first. When the cores match, compare pre-release identifiers using SemVer precedence. Keep invalid forms such as 1.2-beta rejected.
