feat(self-managed): bound Cassandra range reads at 2s under HA - #2978
Under highAvailability.mode: preferred or enforced, the stack now sets Cassandra's range_request_timeout to 2000ms (default 10000ms), and passes cassandra.config through to the Cassandra chart so operators can override it. In local testing this cut failed requests during a single-node crash by about two thirds. It does not remove them.
Additional Details
Problem. When one Cassandra node crashes without a graceful shutdown, nvcf-api returns 500 on function lookups such as GET /v2/nvcf/functions/{id}/versions. Those lookups go through SAI indexes, so Cassandra runs them as range reads, and range reads are never retried on another replica. A crashed node stays in the failure detector's alive set for several seconds, so a read that picks it waits the full 10 s range_request_timeout and fails. See #2918 for the full analysis; this PR is a config-only alternative, with no service code change.
What changed
global.yaml.gotmpl: the Cassandra release gets config.range_request_timeout: 2000ms when HA is on. An operator's cassandra.config is deep-merged on top and wins. With mode: none nothing is added.
tests/ha-value-wiring.sh: assertions for none (absent), preferred and enforced (2000ms).
docs/self-managed/high-availability.md: a section describing the default, the sizing caveat and how to override it.
Test results (local k3d, Cassandra 5.0.9, 3 nodes, RF=3, nvcf-api on a main image, constant open-loop load, kill -9 of one Cassandra process, 3 victims per setting):
range_request_timeout
Failed requests per kill
Failures ended after
10000ms (default)
123, 105, 119 of 900
about 16 s
2000ms
47, 38, 38 of 900
about 4.5 s
Other settings tried had no measurable effect: phi_convict_threshold at its minimum of 5 (Cassandra rejects 4), and dynamic_snitch_badness_threshold: 0.1.
Limitations and risks
It applies on upgrade to every existing HA install, and it is cluster-wide, so every range read (SAI lookups, listings, other services) gets the 2 s limit.
On a small Cassandra (the medium preset, 0.75 CPU) with about 1,000 function versions, normal lookups reached 1.9 s at 5 requests per second, so a 2 s limit leaves little headroom there. The stack default preset is xlarge, which I did not test. The docs say to check latency before upgrading.
About 4% of requests still fail in the first seconds after a node dies. This is a mitigation, not a fix.
Not tested: applying it to a running cluster through Helm (I edited the ConfigMap directly), the xlarge preset, and large scans or listings.
For the Reviewer
The default being on under HA is a deliberate choice, with no separate toggle. Please check that you are comfortable with it applying on upgrade, given the sizing caveat above.
global.yaml.gotmpl: the $cassandraConfig merge, including that operator values win and the none case.
For QA
Ran bash deploy/stacks/self-managed/tests/ha-value-wiring.sh (passes with the change, fails without it), and rendered the Cassandra release under none, preferred, enforced and preferred with an operator override of 5000ms. Kill tests as described above. QA needed: yes. On a representative HA cluster, check that list and lookup endpoints stay well under 2 s, then kill one Cassandra pod under load.
I have signed off my commits for Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO) compliance.
New or existing tests cover these changes.
The documentation is up to date with these changes.

New Features
In preferred and enforced high-availability modes, Cassandra now uses a 2-second timeout for range reads. Custom Cassandra settings can override this value.
With high availability set to none, no timeout is set automatically; custom Cassandra settings are still applied.
Documentation
Added guidance on the timeout’s cluster-wide effect, range-read behavior, and how to customize the value.
Index lookups are range reads, and Cassandra never retries a range read on
another replica. When a replica crashes it stays in the failure detector's
alive set for several seconds, so a read that picks it waits the full
range_request_timeout (10s) and fails with a 500.
Set range_request_timeout to 2000ms when highAvailability.mode is preferred or
enforced. The stack now also passes cassandra.config through to the Cassandra
chart, so operators can override or extend the value; their settings win. With
HA off nothing is set.
In local testing (3-node Cassandra, kill -9 of one node under constant load)
this cut failed requests by about two thirds and ended the failure window
after about 4.5s instead of about 16s. It does not remove failures.

HA modes set Cassandra’s range_request_timeout to 2000ms. Operator values override or extend the generated configuration. Tests check none, preferred, and enforced modes. Documentation describes the timeout behavior and configuration override.
In HA installs, the new 2-second Cassandra range-read timeout can fail slow but healthy lookups or listings, particularly on larger data sets or under-sized clusters. The setting is documented and can be overridden. Check latency on a representative HA cluster before upgrading existing installs.

Verify the 2-second default under representative load.
If a healthy range read exceeds two seconds, Cassandra can time it out even though it would succeed with the previous ten-second default. This setting applies to every range read under HA.
Compare lookup and listing success rates under representative load with both timeout settings. If healthy requests exceed two seconds, retain the previous default or make the shorter timeout opt-in.
