fix: stop Cassandra index reads stalling while a replica is down - #2918
When one of three Cassandra nodes crashes, function lookups by function_id (and other secondary-index reads) stall for up to 10 s and then fail with a 500 that includes the CQL statement. This PR stops the stall with two small changes: a 5 s range_request_timeout on the self-managed Cassandra chart, and one more case in the shared driver retry policy. Retriable Cassandra failures now return 503 with Retry-After (gRPC UNAVAILABLE) and no driver message.
The earlier version of this PR added a custom index-read path with a LOCAL_ONE fallback. That is removed, and the history is squashed to the final approach: the two changes below fix the cause for every service, so nvcf-api does not need its own read path.
Additional Details
Why one node down stalls these reads. SAI lookups are range reads. Cassandra never retries a range read on another replica, so a coordinator that picked the crashed replica waits for range_request_timeout (10 s by default). That equals the services' 10 s driver timeout, so the driver gives up at the same moment and never retries. Every service with secondary-index reads is affected, not just functions (deployments, authz, nvct tasks, ICMS/SIS).
Cassandra chart (deploy/helm/cassandra/helm/values.yaml): range_request_timeout: 5000ms. Only range reads are affected; single-partition reads and writes keep their timeouts. Self-managed only; managed Cassandra does not use this chart. It applies once the chart is released and pinned.
Why 5 s. The value has to balance two things inside the 10 s driver timeout:
Healthy range reads need room to finish. Normal function lookups have been measured at about 1.9 s on a small cluster (medium preset, about 1,000 versions, see feat(self-managed): bound Cassandra range reads at 2s under HA #2978), so 2–3 s leaves little headroom and would fail slow but healthy reads.
The retry needs time too. The retry starts when the coordinator gives up, so it gets whatever is left of the 10 s. At 5 s it has about 5 s, which was enough in every test. At 7 s it has about 3 s, and in testing 43 requests still failed with driver timeouts because their retry did not finish in time.
nv-boot retry policy (NextHostRetryPolicy): retry a read timeout once on the next host when fewer replicas answered than required, even if data was present. For a range read the coordinator's own replica always returns data, so the policy used to rethrow these. The retry goes to another coordinator, which by then avoids the crashed node, so it answers in milliseconds. Behaviour is unchanged where the server timeout still equals the driver timeout (the retry cannot fire in time).
Error mapping (nvcf-api REST and gRPC, kept in sync by a test):
503 with Retry-After: 10 and gRPC UNAVAILABLE: read timeouts, unavailable replicas, overloaded or bootstrapping coordinators, connection failures.
Still 500: write timeouts, driver timeouts and aborted requests (the request may have reached Cassandra), read or write failures.
No response contains the driver message.
nv-boot exceptions: new ServiceUnavailableException (503, Retry-After 10 s by default, withoutRetryAfter for unsafe retries). The MVC and reactive catch-all handlers return "Internal server error" instead of the exception message; this affects every service using nv-boot exceptions.
api-keys uses the shared exception instead of its own CassandraUnavailableException. Status and messages are unchanged.
Test Results
Local k3d, Cassandra 5.0.9 from this chart, 3 nodes, RF 3. A Java client with nvcf-api's driver settings (driver 4.19.3, LOCAL_QUORUM, 10 s request timeout, pool 2, NextHostRetryPolicy) sends 300 SAI reads per second for 100 s. One node's Cassandra process is killed (kill -9) 20 s in.

Each run also has about 8–10 aborted requests at the instant of the crash (requests in flight on the connections that closed); see the follow-up. The stall does not occur on every run (about one in three; 1 of 4 runs at 5 s). Primary-key reads were not affected. The chart value was also checked end to end: after helm upgrade, nodetool gettimeout range reports the configured value on every node.
Unit tests: NextHostRetryPolicyTest, ExceptionTracingExceptionHandlerTest, GrpcConfigurationTest, nv-boot exceptions and api-keys tests pass. The Testcontainers integration tests do not start on macOS Docker Desktop and need the Linux CI lane.
Limitations / follow-ups
Aborted requests on a crash, and a hung or unreachable node. About 8–10 requests per crash fail at once with a closed connection, and stay 500 because they are not retried. When a node freezes or is cut off (rather than crashing), the driver keeps routing about a third of requests to it until its heartbeat fails, about 25–35 s. Marking SELECTs idempotent and enabling speculative executions (max-executions: 2) brought both to zero in testing. That touches every Java service and managed, so it is a separate PR.
For the Reviewer
values.yaml: 5 s, with the reasoning above. Legitimately slow range reads (per page) longer than 5 s would now time out.
NextHostRetryPolicy: the received < blockFor case.
ExceptionTracingExceptionHandler, GrpcConfiguration: the 503 set.
For QA
On a self-managed HA setup, run function lookup traffic and kill -9 the Cassandra process on one node. Expect no stall longer than about 5 s and no 500s from read timeouts.

The change adds configurable strict and stale-tolerant function-index reads, routes selected storage failures to service-unavailable responses, and uses stale reads in selected function and authorized-party lookups. Unmapped MVC and reactive errors now return a fixed internal-error detail.
Changes: Storage availability and function-index reads
Adds an HTTP 503 exception with a default Retry-After delay and an option to omit the header. MVC and reactive catch-all handlers now return "Internal server error" instead of exception messages. The API keys service uses the shared exception for storage failures.
Map storage failures to unavailable responses src/control-plane-services/cloud-functions/nvcf-core/src/main/java/com/nvidia/nvcf/configuration/..., src/control-plane-services/cloud-functions/nvcf-core/src/main/java/com/nvidia/nvcf/configuration/exceptions/StorageExceptions.java, src/control-plane-services/cloud-functions/nvcf-core/src/test/java/com/nvidia/nvcf/configuration/..., src/control-plane-services/cloud-functions/nvcf-core/BUILD.bazel
Core HTTP and gRPC handlers map selected Cassandra and Spring data-access failures to service-unavailable responses. Tests cover handler mappings, response details, and retry headers.
Adds strict and stale-tolerant repository reads with configurable timeouts. After a quorum timeout, stale-tolerant reads use LOCAL_ONE during the configured fallback window. Tests cover query settings, fallback behavior, errors, and metrics.

Selected function and authorized-party lookups use stale-read methods. Version lookups fetch by version ID and check the account and function IDs in memory. If checking for remaining versions fails during deletion, the service logs a warning and keeps function-level secrets.

Add a test that dispatches a transient Cassandra exception through MVC to cover the 503 mapping.
The two new tests call handleStorageUnavailable directly. They never check the @ExceptionHandler type list. Removing the annotation, or removing TransientDataAccessException or DataAccessResourceFailureException from it, would not fail either test. Those failures would then fall back to the generic 500 path, and the CQL text that this PR removes could return. Add a test that throws CassandraReadTimeoutException and CassandraConnectionFailureException from a controller endpoint, with this advice registered on MockMvc. The test should assert status 503 and that the detail contains no CQL text.

@coderabbitai Addressed the MVC test nitpick in f14d7c3: ExceptionTracingExceptionHandlerTest now throws CassandraReadTimeoutException and CassandraConnectionFailureException from a controller with the real ValidationAwareExceptionHandler registered on MockMvc, and asserts 503 with no CQL in the body. Removing the @ExceptionHandler annotation makes both tests fail.

Rethrow ServiceUnavailableException after retaining the secrets.
When the remaining-version lookup fails, the catch logs the failure and continues. The reachable delete endpoint then reports success instead of returning the intended 503 response. Keep the function-level secrets, then rethrow the exception.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment for FunctionManagementService.deleteFunction (rethrow ServiceUnavailableException after keeping the secrets): I'm keeping the current behaviour. When that lookup runs, the deployment, the version and its secrets are already deleted. A 503 would skip the audit record for a delete that happened, and the client's retry would get 404 for the version. The function-level secrets would be kept either way. So the request reports success, audits it, and logs a warning that the secrets were kept.

@shobham-nv You're right. I withdraw the suggestion to rethrow ServiceUnavailableException.
I checked FunctionManagementService.deleteFunction. It deletes the version and its secrets before the remaining-version lookup. If that lookup fails, the current handler keeps the function-level secrets, logs a warning, and continues to auditFunctionDelete.
Rethrowing would skip the audit record and report a failure after the deletion completed. Keeping the current behavior is appropriate.

fix(nvcf-api): bound function lookups while a Cassandra replica is down
fix: stop Cassandra index reads stalling while a replica is down
Oct 28, 2026
Map read timeouts, unavailable replicas, overloaded or bootstrapping
coordinators and connection failures to 503 with Retry-After over REST,
and UNAVAILABLE over gRPC. Write timeouts, driver timeouts, aborted
requests and read/write failures stay 500, because the request may have
reached Cassandra. Neither response includes the driver message.

A secondary-index read is a range read, and the coordinator's own
replica always answers, so a timeout caused by a dead replica reports
data present with fewer responses than required. The policy rethrew
those. Retry them once on the next host, like a read timeout without
data.

Secondary-index reads are range reads, which the coordinator never
retries on another replica, so a read that picked a crashed replica
waits for the whole range_request_timeout. The 10s default equals the
services' 10s driver timeout, so the driver never gets to retry it.
5s gives healthy range reads room to finish (normal function lookups
take up to about 2s on a small cluster) and leaves about 5s for the
driver retry on another coordinator. In testing, 7s left the retry too
little time and some requests still failed.

Move the "retry a read timeout that has data but too few responses" branch out
of NextHostRetryPolicy into RangeReadRetryPolicy, which extends it. The base
policy goes back to retrying only read timeouts without data, so services that
select it no longer also retry single-partition read timeouts.
NextHostRetryPolicy gets a protected shouldRetryReadTimeout hook for this.
nvcf-service and api-keys select RangeReadRetryPolicy in their ncp profile
configs; every other service keeps NextHostRetryPolicy.

TL;DR
When one of three Cassandra nodes crashes, function lookups by
function_id(and other secondary-index reads) stall for up to 10 s and then fail with a 500 that includes the CQL statement.
