Summary
Reduce peak GPU memory during compiled KumoTabular fitting without changing the saved key/value cache.
Description of the change
The large model computes 16 K/V heads per layer, but main already saves only 2 heads for prediction. With PyTorch 2.14 Inductor, those smaller copies can be postponed until later in the compiled computation. The original 16-head allocations must remain alive until the copies finish, so large temporary tensors from multiple layers accumulate. The final cache is already small; the problem is temporary memory during fitting.
Put the two copies in a helper marked with
torch.compiler.nested_compile_region. This gives the copies a separate compiled call boundary instead of letting the compiler schedule their individual operations throughout the larger fit graph. In the measured workload, the compact copies finish earlier, allowing the full source allocations to be released sooner. Both versions retain the same 2-head cache; dtype choices and attention computations are unchanged. The helper remains compiled. The availability check preserves PyTorch 2.7 compatibility; the decorator exists from 2.8 onward. The measurements below use 2.14.
The measured workload uses 100,000 Covertype context rows with the default recipe:
Validation

Cold trials used fresh processes in before/after/after/before order, with unique empty compiler, Triton, CUDA driver and temporary caches. These two trials per arm do not establish a startup speedup or penalty.
All fitted cache leaves and 8,192 × 7 prediction probabilities match bitwise across every cold trial and the final warm fits; accuracy/log loss are identical. Inputs and RNG states match. Existing ICL tests, strict Inductor recording/replay with changed row layouts, gradient controls and pre-commit also passed.
