feat(container): show SSH connection information - #1581
I use Devsy through Orca Remote VMs, and I want to open the container I'm already working in with VS Code or a JetBrains IDE over SSH. With many VMs and workspaces in use, I find it difficult to identify the workspace to pass to devsy workspace describe. I'd like to get the connection details directly from my current container's SSH terminal instead.
Add devsy container info as a public command intended to run inside the current container. It displays the SSH command, Devsy host alias, and configured remote user, using the standard Field/Value table or --result-format json.
Connection details come from the workspace ID and existing container setup result; missing or unreadable setup information returns an error.

Testing
CLI / agent change: updated the existing Ginkgo workspace test under e2e/tests/up/.
Suite / spec: up-workspaces, “create workspace without devcontainer.json”.
Run with: mise run cli:test:e2e:focus "create workspace without devcontainer.json".
Added or updated unit tests: cmd/container/info_test.go covers info behavior and output; cmd/container_test.go covers root command registration and error rendering.
Verification performed with Codex:
mise exec -- go test ./cmd ./cmd/container -count=1: passed.
Built the CLI and Linux agent binaries and ran mise exec -- go test ./e2e -run '^TestRunE2ETests$' -count=1 -v -args '-ginkgo.focus=create workspace without devcontainer.json' -ginkgo.fail-on-empty with an isolated Devsy home: passed on macOS with local Linux arm64 Docker. The spec executes devsy container info --result-format json inside the running workspace and verifies the SSH command, host alias, and remote user. This extends the existing workspace-up spec and runs in the existing up-workspaces CI job.
mise run cli:lint:ci: passed.
NEXT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1 mise exec -- npm run build --prefix sites/docs-devsy-sh and mise exec -- npm run check-links --prefix sites/docs-devsy-sh: passed.
mise run cli:test: failed locally in unchanged packages pkg/agent/delivery, pkg/agent/tunnelserver, pkg/apple, pkg/driver/docker, pkg/driver/external, and pkg/driver/microsandbox. Failures include timeout assertions, runtime detection, snapshot filtering, and an image lookup. The snapshot-filtering failure also reproduces when its test is run alone. These packages are unchanged by this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added devsy container info to display the SSH host, remote user, and connection command in JSON or table format. The command reports errors when required workspace details are unavailable or invalid.
Docker Compose workspaces now receive workspace identity environment variables inside the container, while preserving other configured environment values.
Documentation
Updated workspace connection guidance with instructions for retrieving SSH details from inside a Devsy container, plus notes on SSH configuration and remote-VM setups.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The pull request adds Docker Compose workspace identity variables and registers devsy container info. The command reads and validates container setup data, then reports the SSH command, host, and remote user in JSON or table form.
The generated Compose environment includes workspace ID and UID variables without modifying the merged container environment map. Tests check variable injection, precedence, and behavior when workspace details are absent.
Register and implement container info cmd/root.go, cmd/container/*
The root command registers container and passes its persistent pre-run hook. The new info command validates setup data, derives SSH details, and writes JSON or table output.
Verify and document container info cmd/container/info_test.go, cmd/container_test.go, cmd/root_recovery_test.go, e2e/tests/up/up.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-in-workspaces/connect-to-a-workspace.mdx
Tests cover output, setup-result failures, root validation, and pending context-deletion behavior. End-to-end tests check SSH details. The connection guide documents command use and SSH configuration requirements.

Possibly related issues
devsy-org/devsy#1653: The command reports SSH connection details and a copyable SSH command, which overlaps with the request for remote DevContainer access. It does not add TCP listener configuration.
Suggested reviewers:skevetter
Merge Risk: Low · up to 2da22
The command’s test can leave a stale home setting for later tests. Restore the environment after the test; this is a bounded issue rather than a blocker to the command’s use.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e019a
The command reports narrowly selected local information without opening an SSH connection or granting new privileges. No introduced privilege escalation or credential disclosure was established. Deployment permissions and unusual configured-user values remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated reporting scope is the invoking process's environment, selected container-local setup file, and filesystem-accessible checkout. No new cross-container lookup, credential acquisition, or service privilege is present in the added path. Actual mounted-data access remains dependent on deployment permissions.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The workspace environment check establishes context, not authenticated identity. Setup selection restricts reads to fixed primary or fallback result paths. The generated shell script quotes those paths, while Git receives fixed argument lists. The displayed SSH command is output text, not a subprocess invocation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The command rejects malformed, structurally incomplete, or explicitly failed setup results. These checks do not authenticate setup-file provenance or validate remote-user syntax. The existing producer writes its result before later setup operations, so readable metadata is not proof that every setup phase completed.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make the copyable SSH command's destination boundary explicit and define acceptable configured-user representations. Shell quoting and SSH option parsing are separate contracts; this is defense in depth, not a verified command-execution finding.

- A: Read PR devsy-org#1581 review comments and current source without making changes. Reproduced outside-Git failure with GIT_TRACE and Trace2, and errors from inherited GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY. The latter returned metadata/commit errors rather than the reported successful null result. Also examined PR template and docstring warnings.

- A: Implemented line-based matching of the existing fatal no-repository diagnostic while retaining exit-code and metadata validation. Added real-Git regressions for four trace variables; each failed before the fix and passed afterward. Targeted tests, CI-parity lint, macOS build and 16 built-CLI trace/entry/output-format cases passed. Existing Git environment filtering and docstrings were left unchanged. Prepared a template-aligned PR body preserving personal motivation and the exact supplied Linux output, with AI attribution and honest testing/checklist status. The full race-enabled cli:test task failed in six unchanged packages; an isolated snapshot test reproduced its failure. Kept those failures visible and did not broaden the patch. Independent code and document reviews found no actionable issues.

Share container info between the public and internal agent command trees,
using agent initialization without requiring host workspace configuration.
Read the selected setup result for the configured remote user, and use the
existing workspace SSH alias. Print only the six requested fields, with
nullable checkout metadata and the existing plain/JSON format selection.
Resolve Git information from cwd, including linked worktrees, detached HEAD
and unborn branches. Validate the nearest Git metadata with Git itself so
unreadable nested repositories cannot silently select a parent checkout.
Classify internal query failures so final CLI rendering retains their causes.
Validated focused tests across five packages, command lint, macOS and Linux
amd64 builds, independent code review, and built-binary fixtures through both
entry points. Live container setup/PATH, host SSH aliases, and IDE connections
remain unverified.

Render plain container info with pkg/table's Field/Value table, matching
workspace describe while preserving command output routing and write errors.
Keep the six field values and JSON output unchanged.
Updated both-entrypoint rendering assertions. Focused Go tests and command
lint passed. Built-CLI fixture checks confirmed matching public/internal
tables with the full commit ID retained. Live containers and IDE connections
were outside this presentation-only change.

Expose only the SSH command, host alias and configured remote user through
both container info entrypoints. Remove Git execution and folder lookup.
Add subprocess Ginkgo coverage without Git, register it in Linux CI, and
add the container-terminal invocation to the existing connection guide.
Focused unit tests, lint, CLI build, Ginkgo, site build and link checks pass.
The old implementation fails the no-Git regression oracle. Current runtime
checks use local setup fixtures; no new live Linux container run was made.
Earlier full CLI tests failed in six unchanged packages. Independent code
and documentation reviews found no actionable issues.

Select the container info spec with the existing integration label and
remove its dedicated matrix entry. Keep the container-info label for
focused local runs without starting another CI job.

root registration and shared error rendering separately. Run CLI process
coverage through the existing integration test package.

Inject the workspace ID into Compose containers
When the workspace uses Docker Compose and does not explicitly define this internal variable itself, this guard rejects every invocation: the ID is added only in the single-container path (pkg/devcontainer/single.go:843 calls addExtraEnvVars, whose assignment is at lines 1174-1180), while the Compose override copies mergedConfig.ContainerEnv directly (pkg/devcontainer/compose_up.go:65-69) without adding workspace identity. Consequently supported Compose workspaces get DEVSY_WORKSPACE_ID is missing instead of connection details, so the ID must be injected into the Compose service or obtained from a source shared by both runner paths.

🎯 Functional Correctness | Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Restore config.EnvHome after the expected failure.
The --home flag makes the root pre-run set process-wide config.EnvHome. The expected container info error makes Cobra return before the root post-run can unset it. Later tests can inherit a home directory that t.TempDir() has removed. Register t.Setenv(config.EnvHome, "") before executing the command so test cleanup restores the prior value.
