What

Add meili search, on POST /indexes/{index_uid}/search only. Restarts #14, closed with "On repart de zéro sur ce travail".

Contract

  • The command name and flags derive from its routes by the naming rules of docs/contract/commands.md, and each route is reachable by a distinct set of flags, or the exception is recorded with its reason (or this pull request changes the contract and nothing else)
  • Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts
  • The command never waits for a human: no prompt, no question, no $EDITOR; a delete command spreads BaseCommand.confirmFlags and its examples carry --yes
  • The command never speaks HTTP itself: the SDK or the generated client only, no fetch outside src/lib/clients/

Verb only, with --index for the path parameter: the two exception rows this needs, POST …/search → search --index and the GET twin without command, were already in the table. Nothing to add to ROUTE_EXCEPTIONS.

Tests

  • --help snapshot added or updated on purpose
  • JSON output snapshot for one success case per route and one error case
  • Integration test added (Meilisearch API commands only)
  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally

8 unit tests with msw, 6 integration tests against the docker-compose.yml of this repository, green on Meilisearch v1.54: the hits of --q, the placeholder search, filter + sort + projection + facets, the totalHits/totalPages envelope that --page switches to, --data overridden by a flag, and the real index_not_found.

The only snapshot that changed outside this command is meili schema, which gains the search entry and nothing else.

Simplicity

  • Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16)
  • Anything shared lives in src/lib/, is used by this command, and is named below

Nothing added to src/lib/. Two conversions stay local to the command file, asNumber for the two flags the route types as numbers and asJson for the one it types as an object. Neither validates: text that does not convert is sent as it is.

Docs

  • docs/contract/ updated for every name, flag, variable or code this change adds or renames, or nothing to update
  • The ADRs that touch this change were read; what they decide still holds, or a new ADR says what changed
  • No accepted ADR was edited. A new ADR was added if a decision changed.

One sentence added to rule 10 of commands.md: a body field or query parameter that an experimental feature gates is out of the contract the same way a route is, so it gets no flag and travels through --data. That also records the useNetwork which get documents already left out, undocumented until now. ADRs 0002 and 0003 read; both still hold.

Housekeeping

  • oclif.manifest.json regenerated
  • Changeset added, or the change is invisible to users of the package (docs of this repository, tests, CI)
  • New dependency justified below, or none added

None added.

Notes for the reviewer

Three interface decisions, taken before writing:

  • All 27 non-experimental fields get a flag, not a hand-picked subset (this is where Add meili search, the command the CLI exists for #14 went the other way). Rule 6 says the body fields are the flags, and get documents set the precedent by declaring 7 of the 8 fields of BrowseQuery. The four left out are exactly the ones an experimental feature gates: media (multimodal), personalize, useNetwork (network), inlineRule (dynamicSearchRules).

  • --output ndjson is refused, cli_usage and exit 2. output.md ties ndjson to "one item of the API results array"; search answers hits. Supporting it would be a contract change in output.md and in src/lib/output.ts, which a command pull request must not touch.

  • --limit and --offset are declared here, not spread from BaseCommand.paginationFlags: they are body fields of this route, and --all has no meaning on a search.

  • A flag value the route types as a number or an object is the API's to refuse, not the CLI's. --vector, --ranking-score-threshold and --hybrid carry text that has to be converted; when it does not convert, the text is sent as it is and Meilisearch answers invalid_search_vector, invalid_search_ranking_score_threshold or invalid_search_hybrid_query, each naming the value it refused. Converting anyway was the trap: Number("abc") is NaN, JSON.stringify writes it as null, and a null rankingScoreThreshold is accepted as no threshold at all, so a typo returned exit 0 and the wrong hits. The CLI still refuses what it cannot send: --file and --data are parsed before they can be merged, so malformed JSON there stays cli_input_invalid.

Known, deliberate, and true of every non-list command today: --output ndjson spends the HTTP round trip before failing, because formatData refuses at write time. Fixing it belongs to output.ts.

Ran the simplify skill on the diff. Applied: the 27-field literal is typed SearchParams, so a misspelled field name no longer compiles (it did before, through Object.fromEntries and a cast); a usageErrorOf helper taken from delete documents; SearchResponse from the SDK instead of an interface rewritten by hand in the integration test; the search msw handler no longer simulates a pagination no test reads; the integration test for the ndjson refusal deleted, since the unit test pins it and no sibling integration file repeats a pure-CLI refusal.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a search command to search an index and display results.
    • Configure searches with flags for supported parameters, including pagination, filtering, sorting, facets, highlighting, hybrid and vector search, and response details.
    • Submit a complete search request body using --data or --file, including fields that are not available as flags. If a field is provided both in the body and as a flag, the flag takes precedence.

One route, `POST /indexes/{index_uid}/search`. The GET twin stays
declared without command, as the exceptions table already said.

The 27 non-experimental fields of `SearchQuery` each get a flag, in
kebab-case of their API name, with the lists comma-separated and
`--hybrid` as JSON text (rules 6 and 7). The four fields an experimental
feature gates, `media`, `personalize`, `useNetwork` and `inlineRule`,
get none and travel through `--data` or `--file`; rule 10 of
`commands.md` now says so, for them and for the `useNetwork` that
`get documents` already left out.

`--output ndjson` is refused: the response is a `hits` envelope, not the
`results` list that `output.md` ties ndjson to.

Walkthrough

Adds a search command for POST /indexes/{index_uid}/search. The command supports search flags and JSON body input through --data or --file. Explicit flags take precedence over matching body fields. Unit and integration tests cover request construction, search results, and errors.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

`--vector`, `--ranking-score-threshold` and `--hybrid` carry text the
route types as a number or an object, so the command converts it. It
used to refuse the text that does not convert, with a message and a code
of its own. It now sends that text as it is: Meilisearch answers
`invalid_search_vector`, `invalid_search_ranking_score_threshold` or
`invalid_search_hybrid_query`, each naming the value it refused, and the
CLI passes it through like any other API error.

Converting without that rule was not an option either: `Number("abc")`
is `NaN`, `JSON.stringify` writes it as `null`, and the API accepts a
null `rankingScoreThreshold` as no threshold at all, so a typo returned
exit 0 and the wrong hits.

The CLI still refuses what it cannot send: `--file` and `--data` have to
be parsed before they can be merged, so malformed JSON there stays
`cli_input_invalid`.

Comment thread src/commands/search.ts Outdated
`Number` reads more than JSON does. `--ranking-score-threshold 0x1`
became the threshold 1, and `1e999` became Infinity, which JSON writes
as null: both turned what the agent typed into another value, without
saying so. That is the same failure the previous commit removed, on a
narrower input.

Text that spells a decimal number becomes that number; everything else
is sent as the text it is, and the API names it. `.5`, `+1` and `1e-3`
still convert: they denote the value they look like.

Found by CodeRabbit on #25.

`Number` converts more than a decimal number: `0x1` and an overflow to
Infinity both convert, and both change the value in silence. The bullet
now says which text becomes a number, and why the line is drawn there.

Follows the fix on #25, found by CodeRabbit.

Reject unsupported NDJSON before calling Meilisearch.

search awaits this.meilisearch.index(flags.index).search(undefined, params) before this.output rejects --output ndjson. An API or network error can therefore replace the documented cli_usage exit 2, and unsupported output still sends an unnecessary request. Move the NDJSON validation before the SDK call and preserve the existing usage error.
