test: exercise panel database and encryption-key recovery - #770
Panel database recovery needs to preserve live games, restored authorization and the encryption key paired with the backup. This adds a recovery runbook for combined and standalone deployments and an isolated SQLite recovery drill in CI.
The drill backs up a private standalone panel, destroys its working database, restores a copy, invalidates old bearer credentials and checks users, scoped permissions, encrypted cluster registration, audit integrity and continued game progress. A wrong-key startup must exit without serving HTTP; the probe has a positive control. A sanitized CI artifact records actual recovery-point age and recovery time, including the wrong-key trial. The original archive remains read-only.
The runbook covers database outage/loss, lost keys, Kubernetes/SQL identity reconciliation and operator-selected targets. PostgreSQL PITR and complete storage-cluster recovery remain deployment-specific procedures.
Validation: E2E Go source and Python compilation passed; actionlint, offline zizmor and whitespace checks passed. Runtime tests and measured recovery results are pending CI, per the repository's compile-only local policy.
Includes the shared web build prerequisite from #759 so full CI can build the existing UI.
Includes the shared NuclearOption agent correction also present in #771: one absolute deadline covers dialing, request writes and response reads, and a stalled partial request closes the connection. Regression sources cover blocked length and body writes; the original closed-response assertion is preserved.
The recovery drill waits for Healthy cluster discovery, grants the isolated administrator access to the fixture cluster and namespace, and logs in again after that grant invalidates its session. The Kubernetes-created game is assigned to the administrator through the scoped transfer API; share creation must fail before that assignment and succeed afterward. Both administrator and reader cookies are proved valid before backup and rejected through the authenticated self-read endpoint after recovery. Its template update changes only the intended command, avoiding conflicts with controller status updates.

Summary
Recovery procedures and drill specification docs/panel-recovery.md, docs/standalone-panel.md, test/e2e/specs.md
The runbook adds backup guidance and procedures for database outages, database loss, authorization reconciliation, and key recovery. The E2E specification describes the recovery drill and its coverage boundaries.
The maintenance script creates a read-only archive, simulates loss, restores only to an absent database, invalidates restored sessions and credentials, and reports integrity and probe results.
The amd64 E2E workflow and bucket selection include recovery. The workflow configures the report directory and uploads matching JSON artifacts.

Summary
Context-aware requests and response handling test/e2e/env.go, test/e2e/api_client_response_e2e_test.go, test/e2e/specs.md
APIClient.DoContext uses a caller-provided context. Body-read errors now return the response and partial body with a wrapped error; tests cover complete and truncated responses and integer-field extraction.
RCON Exchange Deadline
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Exchange deadline and validation agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_deadline_test.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_test.go, agent/specs.md
NuclearOption.Exec applies one deadline to dialing, request writes, and response reads. Tests cover stalled writes and deadline installation; the specification describes the deadline and response cap.
The recovery drill does not verify that restored API tokens are rejected. The current restore code deletes them, so this is a bounded test gap rather than a known recovery failure; the change is mergeable with a follow-up to cover that path.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #728 is the only active target. Its coding requirements are assessed below. Parent context does not apply.
Runbooks for database outage, database loss, original-key loss, and SQL restore while games run [#728]: docs/panel-recovery.md (+175 lines in the PR summary) covers backup inventories, SQLite and PostgreSQL backup handling, outage and loss, lost or wrong keys, authorization reconciliation, and live-workload verification. PostgreSQL PITR and full storage-cluster recovery are documented as deployment-specific, as the issue allows. Implemented.
Correct-key drill restores users, permissions, registrations, and credential-backed operations [#728]: test/e2e/panel_recovery_e2e_test.go (TestPanel_OfflineRecovery, +586 lines) restores an offline SQLite archive. It checks users, scoped bindings, encrypted cluster registration, and game dispatch. Helpers in test/e2e/testdata/recovery/maintenance.py support the restore. Implemented.
Fail-closed wrong key [#728]: the test starts the API with the wrong key. It requires a nonzero exit with the inactive-key error and zero HTTP responses. A positive control is included. Implemented.
Stale authorization and sessions [#728]: maintenance.py restore deletes sessions and API tokens and revokes active shares. The test checks that pre-backup sessions and a share token are rejected. Audit-row count and digest are checked after restore. Implemented.
Live games preserved [#728]: the test records game identity and counter state. The API and operator are not stopped. Implemented.
Unrecoverable data and measured fixture RPO/RTO [#728]: the runbook describes unrecoverable data. The drill writes a JSON report with recovery-point age and recovery time to GAMEPLANE_RECOVERY_REPORT_DIR, and CI uploads it. The measured values are not yet in the docs because CI has not run. This is a documentation follow-up after CI results, not a missing implementation.
Changes since the previous review (head eddf9a2 to 3fd8ade): commit 41eea08 changes APIClient.DoContext in test/e2e/env.go to return the response, partial body, and wrapped read error. It adds real-HTTP regression tests in test/e2e/api_client_response_e2e_test.go. It restores the generic extractIntField(body, "id") helper. Commit 3fd8ade adds a generic integer-field parsing test. These changes support the drill and do not alter its requirement coverage. Earlier conclusions remain supported.
Uncertainty: this review used the whole-PR summary and focused inspections only. Runtime drill results and measured RPO/RTO values are pending CI. The drill implementation is present, but its runtime pass state is not verified.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Out-of-scope review for the current head 3fd8ade against merge base 4310255.
In scope, supporting #728:
test/e2e/testdata/recovery/, test/e2e/panel_recovery_e2e_test.go, test/e2e/buckets.sh, test/e2e/ci_selection_e2e_test.go, test/e2e/suite-components.json, test/e2e/specs.md: recovery drill and its bucket wiring.
hack/ci_scope.py and hack/test_ci_scope.py: select the recovery bucket.
.github/workflows/ci.yaml: recovery bucket, report directory, and artifact upload. The raw summary describes only these recovery-related changes.
test/e2e/env.go (DoContext) and test/e2e/api_client_response_e2e_test.go: response handling used by the drill and its regression tests.
docs/panel-recovery.md and docs/standalone-panel.md: recovery documentation.
Resolved since the previous review: test/e2e/api_events_roles_scope_e2e_test.go shows no diff between the merge base and head. The previous out-of-scope item for that file no longer applies.
Unrelated, demonstrated: agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_deadline_test.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_test.go, and agent/specs.md. The raw summary lists these files at head. They change the Nuclear Option agent exec deadline and connection closure. They do not touch panel database, key, or authorization recovery. The PR description says this is a correction carried from #771. A reference to another PR does not place this code in #728 scope.
Unverified: the ci.yaml diff could not be read. The previous review reported an e2e image build timeout change from 15 to 30 minutes. The current summary does not list it, so its presence is unknown. The web build prerequisite from #759 is described as needed for full CI to build the UI. Its files are not identified in the summary, so its contents cannot be assessed. The raw summary of ci.yaml does not mention the timeout change.
No CLAUDE.md or Constitution rule file was read in this review. No house-rule citation is made.
Resolution
Move the NuclearOption agent changes out of this PR. The affected paths are agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_deadline_test.go, agent/internal/rcon/nuclearoption_test.go, and agent/specs.md. Carry them in the PR for #771 only. Then update the PR description to remove the shared NuclearOption correction paragraph. After that change, reassess scope. Also confirm that the ci.yaml diff contains no unrelated timeout change, and identify the files for the #759 web build prerequisite. Keep that prerequisite only if the recovery CI job depends on it, and state that dependency in the PR description.

Hey, thanks for the recovery drill, it's a really useful addition. Two small things:
test/e2e/env.go:602-604 (DoContext): when reading the body fails, it now returns nil, nil, err. A lot of existing tests do r, _, _ = cli.Get(...) and then read r.StatusCode (e.g. api_roles_e2e_test.go:83-99), so a single body-read error would panic and take down the whole e2e binary for that bucket, not just one test. Please return the real *http.Response (status, headers) together with the read error instead of nil, so callers that ignore the error still get a valid response object.
Commit f12d902 renames extractIntField(body, "id") to extractUserID(body) and touches api_auth_e2e_test.go and api_session_e2e_test.go, which aren't part of the recovery work. The generic helper already does the job, so unless there's a reason I'm missing, could you drop that rename and just call extractIntField(body, "id") in the new test? If there is a reason, let me know.
DoContext now returns the real response, its partial body and the wrapped read error. The real-HTTP regression checks truncated 200 and 401 responses, including preserved status and headers.
Restored extractIntField(body, "id") and its original callers; the recovery test uses that helper too. This is an additive correction, preserving the published commit history.
The full E2E source compiled with the e2e tag. Runtime tests remain in CI under the repository policy.
Fixed the unparam failure in 3fd8ade0 while preserving the generic extractIntField helper requested in review. The new API response regression exercises multiple field names, zero, exact-key matching, missing fields and wrong value types, and is registered in the recovery bucket/component mapping. The earlier recovery E2E passed; the failed check was E2E-source lint. The upstream merge retains both recovery and management-placement coverage. Regression sources and workflow configuration compile/check successfully; fresh CI is running.

Seed an API token before backup and check it after restore.
TestPanel_OfflineRecovery never creates an API token. It also never sends one to the restored API. The stale-authorization checks use only the two pre-backup session cookie jars (test/e2e/panel_recovery_e2e_test.go:285-288) and the share token (:290). test/e2e/testdata/recovery/maintenance.py deletes api_tokens during restore (line 71), but no assertion observes that deletion.
A regression that removes the DELETE FROM api_tokens statement would leave restored API tokens valid. The drill would still pass, because the session deletion alone makes the cookie checks return 401. The restored_bearers_invalidated report field (line 327) is a literal true, so it does not reflect any API-token check.
This is a coverage gap, not a current failure. maintenance.py currently deletes api_tokens. Add one API token before the backup, use it against the recovered endpoint, and expect http.StatusUnauthorized. Derive restored_bearers_invalidated from the checks that run. The token issuance request is not in the inspected evidence, so the exact call should follow the repository's existing token-creation contract.

Addressed the API-token cleanup coverage gap from the latest review in cae07ec1.
API-token issuance and Bearer authentication are not implemented yet: protected API routes currently use session cookies, and api_tokens is a reserved table. An HTTP Bearer request would therefore fail before backup as well, without proving restoration removed a token.
The drill now seeds a random token row offline after stopping the API, requires it in the backup, and verifies zero token rows in the restored working database. Removing the cleanup DELETE now fails the drill. restored_bearers_invalidated is derived from that database check and the actual old-session/share HTTP rejection results, with each result recorded separately. The archive and audit integrity checks remain in place, and token values are never output.
E2E source and Python syntax compilation passed, and independent review found no blockers. Fresh CI is pending on the new head.

Includes the shared NuclearOption agent correction also present in #771: one absolute deadline covers dialing, request writes and response reads, and a stalled partial request closes the connection. Regression sources cover blocked length and body writes; the original closed-response assertion is preserved.
Closes #728.
