Why

Decision models answer typed questions (predicate or noul, choice, score, box) with probabilities instead of generated text. LiteLLM exposes them on POST /v1/decisions (OpenAI Decisions format) and POST /v1/systemone (System One format). The LLM stack rejected both routes, so decision models served by NVCF functions could not be reached through vanity names or the LLM API gateway.

This adds both routes as pure passthrough routes, routed by model, non-streaming, with no translation between the two formats and no engine-specific code.

Assumptions to confirm

These are choices the issues left open. Each one is easy to change; please say if any is wrong.

  1. Enablement. A model is enabled for a route only when its function declares that route in uris when the function is created. Otherwise the gateway returns 404 in the route's native error shape. The gateway has no chart-settable per-route configuration today, so a capability flag was not used. Because uris cannot change after creation, adding a route to an existing function needs a new function.
  2. System One error shape. Gateway-written errors on /v1/systemone use {"error":{"code","message","request_id"},"request_id"} from the public System One error docs, with request_id equal to the X-Request-Id response header. Codes: invalid_json (400), invalid_request (400 or 422), invalid_api_key (401), not_found (404 and the 410 end-of-life case), request_too_large (413), rate_limit_exceeded (429), internal_error (500 and 499), provider_unavailable (502 and 503), provider_timeout (504). The docs show one example body and a code table, not a schema. The gateway does not set the X-System-One-* headers.
  3. /v1/decisions errors use the OpenAI error shape. Client errors have type invalid_request_error and server errors server_error. Unknown model is model_not_found and an expired model is model_expired.
  4. Input token estimate. Text is counted per string leaf as 5 + ceil(length / 4). Each image counts a flat 1024 tokens. This is a placeholder, set by NVCF_DECISION_IMAGE_TOKENS or the chart value llmApiGateway.config.decisionImageTokens. Base64 image data is never counted as text. Bodies nested deeper than 64 levels get a 400.
  5. Metering. Rate limits use the request count and the pre-call estimate, which is also sent as X-Input-Tokens and X-Token-Estimate. The backend's usage.input_tokens is recorded as an observation only, because System One says usage may be absent. The Vanity direct-to-function path has no limiter of its own, as Vanity has none today.
  6. Streaming. stream: true is ignored. Responses are not streamed. Vanity does not set Accept: text/event-stream for these routes.
  7. Backend errors pass through unchanged. A non-2xx response with an X-Stargate-Error-Code header is a router error and gets the native shape. A non-2xx response with an empty body and no marker is also rendered natively, but only for 413, 499, 502, 503 and 504, the bare statuses Stargate emits (400 is left out: a bare router 400 can only come from malformed gateway-set headers). Any other empty backend error, including an empty backend 400, is relayed as is. The few bare Stargate errors are indistinguishable from an empty backend error with the same status, so one of those from a backend is rewritten. Marking every Stargate-generated error with X-Stargate-Error-Code would remove the heuristic and is a follow-up (the gateway comment already assumes every router error is marked).
  8. usePexec. With usePexec: true the invocation service calls the function's default path, so one function serving both routes should use usePexec: false. The docs say so. The example in feat(vanity-gateway): support decision model routes /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone #2922 used usePexec: true for both.
  9. The plain-text 400 for a reserved shadow header (shadow_guard.go) is unchanged for every route.
  10. Request IDs. On /v1/systemone, gateway-written errors carry the gateway request ID in the header and body. Through Vanity, the X-Request-Id header is always Vanity's own (existing policy), so a relayed backend error whose body carries its own request_id has a different header ID. Directly on the gateway, a backend X-Request-Id on a relayed error is kept.
  11. The routes are documented as beta, and the body is passed through unchanged, so a format change needs no gateway change.
  12. Test tooling. The Stargate dev auth fixture gets an optional invocation call, and the Stargate copy of llm_gateway.proto gets the matching messages, so the mock integration run can declare per-model uris. The messages match the source proto (the unused tokenizer field is reserved in this copy). The call stays unimplemented unless a test configures it. Test tokens are fixed fake strings.
  13. Size limits are unchanged: Vanity 25 MB, the gateway unlimited by default, Stargate no body limit but a 64 MiB retry replay buffer (413 above it), Pylon 64 MiB. A 13 MB image request is tested.

What changed

  • vanity-gateway: v2config.openai.decisions and v2config.typesafeSystemOne sections with schema, chart and CI values; both routes; native errors from one helper, including offline and end-of-life; /v1/models lists decision models; the backend 429 message customization is bypassed on these routes; tracing and docs.
  • llm-api-gateway: both routes through the proxy path; enablement by declared uris; the estimator; error shapes; backend errors relayed byte for byte; usage observation; zero-seeded metrics for the two routes; chart value decisionImageTokens; fidelity fixtures.
  • Stargate and mock-dynamo: the two routes; header, 13 MB body, 429 and 400 passthrough and 413 tests; mock-dynamo serves canned responses; the e2e script has a decision case.
  • Sample backend: both routes with documented response shapes, header echo and its own 16 MiB request limit.
  • Docs: overview, self-managed, nvcf-cli, Stargate contract, Vanity READMEs, metrics reference.

How to review

This is a large change: 88 files and about 6,900 added lines, about 60 percent of them tests, fixtures and scenarios. It touches four components and a test sample. The commits are in the order they were written, so components interleave. Reviewing one component at a time is easier; every commit below belongs to exactly one component.

  1. Stargate and mock-dynamo, about 1,500 lines, mostly tests. The routes are two constants and two route lines in http_proxy.rs; the rest is contract tests, the mock server, an optional dev-auth call and the e2e script. Commits 29a3174, 54c0a5c, 3c5cf43, 3aeb8c6, 2832d82, fc7fdb2, 8b59ad5, 565aeb3.
  2. llm-api-gateway, about 2,100 lines, the core. Start with api/decision_handler.go (route, enablement, forwarding), then api/decision_token_count.go (estimator), the error shapes in api/error_response.go, the backend error relay in api/proxy_handler.go, then usage, metrics and the chart value. Commits d9d596c, d1626fe, 8ecaef0, 358335a, 2bb1dbf, 982826a, 4ed672b, ef08956, 2b03bcd, d250ba4, 404a18b, 92576da.
  3. vanity-gateway, about 1,050 lines: config sections and schema, the routes, one native error helper, /v1/models. Commits b91a234, d69412f, 2eb0634, 4a1f709, f565278.
  4. Sample backend, about 950 lines, mostly tests: canned responses used by BDD and smoke checks. Commits 037cd4e, f9568c6, c12ac73.
  5. BDD, about 880 lines: two scenarios, one new step and a wiring test that checks the scenarios fail for broken gateways. Commits 878208a, bb5bde3.
  6. Shared docs and nvcf-cli docs: commits 95ad3a5, 6e4fdc8. Component docs are inside the component commits.

If time is short, the smallest useful read is the gateway handler and estimator, the two Stargate route lines, and the Assumptions above.

Customer Release Notes

Added beta support for decision model routes /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone in the LLM API gateway, Stargate and Vanity Gateway. A function serving a route must declare it in uris when it is created.

Plan Summary

Not applicable.

Usage

Create the function with the routes declared:

nvcf-cli function create ... --function-type LLM \
  --llm-model "name=example/decision-model,uris=/v1/decisions|/v1/systemone"

Map it in Vanity (one function serving both routes uses usePexec: false):

v2config:
  openai:
    decisions:
      example_decision-model:
        modelName: example/decision-model
        functionID: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001
  typesafeSystemOne:
    example_decision-model:
      modelName: example/decision-model
      functionID: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001

Testing

Ran, all passing:

  • vanity-gateway, llm-api-gateway and the sample: go build, go vet, go test -count=1 ./...; race tests for the Vanity middleware and gateway packages and the gateway api package.
  • Chart: the Vanity chart-render and shadow-schema scripts; the llm-api-gateway default-ownership script and helm lint.
  • Stargate: cargo fmt, clippy with -D warnings, stargate_integration (163), library tests (492), mock-dynamo (46 and 2), pylon-lib tunnel tests (133).
  • Mock integration run through gateway, Stargate, Pylon and mock-dynamo with scripts/e2e-last-cluster.sh (all last-cluster cases and both decision routes), on macOS arm64, from the PR commit. It covers 200 bodies, header echo, a 13 MB body, a backend 429 with Retry-After and a backend 400, with exactly one backend hit per request.
  • The same Rust tests, the mock integration script (all last-cluster cases and both decision routes) and the Go tests for llm-api-gateway and the sample, on a Linux x86_64 host with Go 1.26.10: identical results (163 integration tests, 492 library tests, mock-dynamo 46 and 2, 133 tunnel tests). On that host the Vanity root package test fails only because a local stack on the host already listens on port 10081, which that test binds; the other Vanity packages pass there.
  • BDD: two @llm-function-type @llm-decision-routes scenarios (the gateway, and Vanity direct and through the director) and one new step, the HTTP response header ... should equal .... The offline wiring tests pass, including a test that the scenarios fail for nine broken gateway behaviors.
  • Live BDD on a local k3d stack (Linux host, the install and registration scenarios plus the new gateway scenario): 4 scenarios and 115 steps passed, with the gateway, Stargate and sample backend built from this branch (released images do not serve the routes, so the passes could not come from them). The gateway scenario covers both routes through the LLM gateway, Stargate and Pylon to the sample backend: 200 answers, TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Images and a vendor header reaching the backend, route isolation with a 404 in each native shape, and backend 429 and 400 passthrough.
  • Mutation checks: the estimator and the mock-dynamo body limit tests fail when the code is broken, and so do the e2e body, digest and Retry-After assertions.
  • Some early red runs were compile errors, not failing assertions (the estimator and config tests); the mutation checks above cover them.

Not run:

  • The Vanity BDD scenario. The published Vanity chart (0.10.0) does not know the new decisions and typesafeSystemOne mappings, so it cannot pass against a released chart until a chart containing this schema is released. Until then the direct-to-function path through the invocation service, with usePexec: false, and Vanity's /v1/models listing are unproven in a cluster. The scenarios need a sample image built from this branch (SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE, see tests/bdd/README.md).
  • The invocation service on the direct path, so delivery of TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Images to the function there is unproven.
  • The Stargate performance regression comparison. This change adds two route registrations and no new code on existing routes. The repo has no automated baseline versus candidate tooling.
  • A full Bazel build. Bazel was run only for mock-dynamo and the dev auth binary.

QA is needed: BDD scenarios and a staging smoke check once a model serves these routes.

Notes

  • Release order: the Vanity schema change needs a Vanity chart release before the Vanity scenario can run live and before a config can use the new sections. The gateway and Stargate parts do not depend on it.
  • Draft until the Vanity BDD scenario can run against a chart that has the new schema, or until a reviewer asks to move it out of draft.
  • The branch had two independent code reviews. Findings that changed the code: a bounded single-pass estimator, backend errors relayed unchanged, a chart value for the image estimate, the 429 customization bypass, documented sample and mock response types, and stronger e2e assertions. Findings kept as described under Assumptions 9 and 10: the plain-text shadow header rejection and Vanity's ownership of X-Request-Id.
  • Follow-ups: have Stargate mark every router error with X-Stargate-Error-Code; X-Input-Tokens and X-Token-Estimate sent by a client are not removed before the estimate is applied (existing behavior on every route).
  • The sample backend needs a new image tag after merge before BDD can use it.
  • Observability: new counter llm_api_gateway_decision_usage_observations_total and a new span attribute nvcf.org.id; no renamed metrics.

Add POST /v1/decisions and POST /v1/systemone with canned answers in each route's shape, so BDD and smoke tests can use the sample as a decision model backend.

Each response carries an echo object with selected request headers and the body length, and sets x-mock-echo-typesafe-danger-zone-images, so a test can prove the headers arrived. x_load_tester_echo returns the request body. The routes have their own 16 MiB request limit (an 8 MB image is about 10.7 MB as base64); existing routes keep 10 MiB. ?mock_error=429 and ?mock_error=400 return backend-style errors for passthrough tests.

Add v2config.openai.decisions and v2config.typesafeSystemOne as model
mapping sections that accept functionType LLM. Request body sampling
stays unsupported for them, so promptCacheKey and firstMessageHash are
rejected. The values schema, CI values and chart-render checks cover
both sections.

Decision and System One bodies have no fixed schema, so the estimate walks
the JSON and counts every string leaf as text. Image slots (input_image
objects, images arrays, assets maps and base64 data URLs) count a flat
NVCF_DECISION_IMAGE_TOKENS each and their payload is never counted, so a
large image neither hides nor inflates the estimate. The default of 1024 is
a placeholder until a measured value is set.

The decision routes speak two error dialects. /v1/decisions keeps the OpenAI
envelope and /v1/systemone gets {"error":{code,message,request_id},request_id}
with the code mapped from the status. errorShapeFor picks the envelope by path
and is used only by the HTTP error handler; credentials, the 401 text and the
Request-Id header stay on isMessagesRequest. The request ID hook now also
runs for System One so X-Request-Id matches the body after backend headers
are copied.

…estion shapes

Parse questions tolerantly so object choices, levels, criteria, box questions, images and assets never cause a 400. Answers now carry name, probabilities, confidence, box and legend as each question type requires.

Register both routes behind the shared request size limit and resolve the
vanity model name in each route's own section. The body is forwarded
unchanged and stream is ignored, so Accept is not set to event-stream.

Gateway-generated errors now use the shape of the route the client
called: the OpenAI shape on /v1/decisions and the System One shape on
/v1/systemone, with request_id equal to the X-Request-Id response
header. One writeNativeError helper covers body errors, unknown model
(now JSON instead of plain text), offline and end-of-life, client
cancel and proxy failure. The protocol is stored in the request context
at route entry because usePexec rewrites the URL path before proxying.
Backend errors still pass through unchanged.

…y path

POST /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone forward the body unchanged apart from the
model rewrite, through the passthrough path that clones client headers so
vendor headers such as TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Images reach Stargate. Only model
is parsed. A model is enabled for a route only when the function declares the
route in the model's uris; no spec, no uris or an undeclared route is a 404 in
the route's native error shape, before the backend is called. Admission counts
one request plus the estimated input tokens and refuses with a native 429.

Include models enabled on /v1/decisions or /v1/systemone in the shared
model list and in /v1/models/{model}, with supported_endpoints naming
the routes each model serves. Expiry and offline state follow the
decision mappings too. Decision models stay out of the Anthropic list.
Span endpoint.type reports decisions and systemone for both the direct
and the LLM gateway path.

A decision model defines its own error shapes, for example a FastAPI detail
list, and its bodies can be large or compressed. On these two routes a non-2xx
response without X-Stargate-Error-Code is a backend error and is written as
received: status, headers and body, with no size cap, re-encoding or envelope.
Errors the router generates carry that header and still get the route's
native shape. A relayed backend error also keeps its own X-Request-Id.

Describe the beta /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone routes, their mapping
sections, the example mapping, error shapes and the usePexec caveat: a
usePexec function reaches only its default path, so a function serving
both routes should set usePexec to false. Bodies pass through unchanged.

A 2xx decision response is copied to the client through the Messages usage
scanner. When it reports usage.input_tokens the count is recorded on
llm_tokens_total as a prompt observation; a response without usage counts
nothing. The estimate stays the admission value. Encoded bodies are skipped.
decision_usage_observations_total (observed or absent) and bounded zero series
for the two routes on the HTTP request instruments are seeded at start, so the
first scrape before traffic already shows them.

Fixtures pin that /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone rewrite only model, relay
the response unchanged, and estimate input tokens with a flat per-image
count. The kept request checks gain malformed JSON, non-object, duplicate-case
model, missing model and missing function prefix rows for both routes. The
shared passthrough test API declares every route for the corpus models because
the decision routes have no default-allow. The README lists the routes, the
declared-uris enablement and NVCF_DECISION_IMAGE_TOKENS.

… the native shape

Stargate sets X-Stargate-Error-Code only on routing rejections and overload.
Other router failures, such as a replay buffer 413 or a failed tunnel, are a
bare status with an empty body. On the decision routes a non-2xx response with
no error code header and no body is now a router error and gets the route's
native envelope. A non-empty body without the header is still a backend error
and is relayed byte for byte. The check reads at most one byte and puts it
back.

Decision models answer typed questions with probabilities. The beta POST /v1/decisions and POST /v1/systemone routes pass bodies through unchanged and are not streamed. Add them to the LLM Gateway guide, the self-managed routing and function enablement pages, and the Stargate contract and data flow diagram. Explain that a function declares the routes in uris at creation and that a usePexec function reaches only its default path.

Use separate response types per route. Decisions returns typed choice values, probability lists, numeric scores and detailed usage. System One returns keyed probabilities, a legend object and input and output usage only.

The estimator decoded the remaining subtree into a copied RawMessage at every
nesting level, so a valid body with a large leaf nested deeply cost hundreds
of MiB of copying before admission (316 MB for a 1 MiB leaf nested 60 levels).
It now reads decoder tokens in one pass with a stack of at most 64 frames.
Deeper bodies are refused with a 400 invalid_request. Estimates are unchanged.

…n routes

An empty body is a router error only for the statuses Stargate emits as bare
errors: 400, 413, 499, 502, 503 and 504. An intentional empty backend 401,
403, 404, 429 or other 5xx is relayed unchanged, headers included. The
router-error branch no longer copies X-System-One-* headers from the response.

NVCF_DECISION_IMAGE_TOKENS could not be set on a chart install because the

(default 1024) now renders into it. The default ownership test checks the
default and an override.

Decision models answer typed questions and are served from /v1/decisions
and /v1/systemone. Stargate needs both paths so the LLM gateway can send
them through the same model routing, retry and tunnel path as the other
OpenAI-compatible routes. Pylon already forwards vendor headers on every
path except /v1/messages, so no Pylon change is needed.

Cover /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone over raw QUIC, HTTP/3 and
WebTransport, direct and reverse: vendor headers reach the backend, a
13 MB base64 body arrives byte-identical, backend 429 and 400 bodies are
passed through unretried, missing required headers return 400 without an
upstream call, an oversized Content-Length returns 413, and routing and
overload rejections carry x-stargate-error-code. The Pylon header policy
test also asserts the vendor headers are forwarded.

Mock-based integration runs need a backend for the new decision routes.
Both handlers return a canned answer in each route's documented shape,
echo the request headers and body length so a test can prove vendor
headers survive the tunnel, and serve 429 (Retry-After: 7) and 400
errors on request via ?mock_error=. The routes accept bodies up to
16 MiB so base64 image requests are not cut off by axum's 2 MB default.

The LLM API gateway only serves a decision route for a model whose
function declares the route in its uris, and it learns the uris from the
invocation auth call. The dev auth fixture answered only worker auth, so
no loopback run could exercise the decision routes through the gateway.
An optional invocation section now enables the invocation RPC with a
fixed client token and per-model uris. Without it the RPC stays
unimplemented as before.

Stargate changes need a loopback run through the real path. The script
now also posts /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone through the gateway,
Stargate, Pylon and mock-dynamo, with the gateway authenticating against
the dev auth fixture that declares both routes. It checks the 200 body,
that the TypeSafe-Danger-Zone-Images vendor header and a 13 MB base64
body reach the backend, and that a backend 429 with Retry-After and a
backend 400 come back unchanged and unretried. --decisions-only runs
just this case.

…decision routes

Stargate marks only routing rejections and overload with X-Stargate-Error-Code.
Its other router failures are bare 413, 499, 502, 503 and 504; its bare 400s
come from malformed gateway-set headers the gateway never sends. An empty 400
is therefore the backend's and is relayed unchanged.

The canned answers copied the question type but always used the
predicate shape (Decisions) or the noul shape (System One), so a choice,
score or box question got an answer a client could not parse as that
type. Answers now follow each type's documented shape, read from the
question loosely so unexpected fields never fail a request.

An end to end run can only prove a large base64 body arrived unchanged
if the backend reports more than its length. The decision echo now
includes the SHA-256 of the received body, computed in a small local
implementation so no dependency is added.

The decision case only checked a few fields, so a changed image payload
or a rewritten error body could pass. It now compares the SHA-256 the
backend reports with the digest of the body the gateway should forward,
and the complete 200, 400 and 429 bodies and the Retry-After value with
the canned responses.

The decision route scenarios must show that a backend 429 keeps its Retry-After header through the gateways. The HTTP client recorded only status and body, so no step could read a response header. Record the headers and add one step that compares a header value.

Both routes are passthrough on the LLM gateway and the Vanity Gateway, so a regression would show only on a live request. Add two @llm-decision-routes scenarios: one through the LLM gateway (answers, vendor header echo, per-model route isolation with native 404 shapes, backend 429 and 400 passthrough) and one through the Vanity Gateway (direct and LLM director models, cross-section 404s, /v1/models supported_endpoints).

The released sample image does not serve the routes yet, so the scenarios read SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE, which defaults to the :local sample, and leave SAMPLE_LLM_ECHO_IMAGE alone. A wiring test runs both scenarios against a fake gateway and checks that nine broken gateway behaviors fail them.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds beta /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone support across the LLM API Gateway, Vanity Gateway, and Stargate. It adds route-specific configuration, token estimation, error handling, usage metrics, mock implementations, and gateway and end-to-end tests.

Changes: Decision route forwarding and metering

Layer / File(s) Summary
LLM Gateway request handling
src/invocation-plane-services/llm-api-gateway/api/*, src/invocation-plane-services/llm-api-gateway/config/*, src/invocation-plane-services/llm-api-gateway/telemetry/*, deploy/helm/llm-api-gateway/*
The gateway registers both POST routes, checks that the model declares the requested URI, estimates input tokens, applies admission checks, and forwards the request body. The image-token estimate defaults to 1024 and is configurable. Eligible responses are relayed while usage observations and route metric series are recorded.
Vanity Gateway mappings and routes
src/invocation-plane-services/vanity-gateway/gateway/*, src/invocation-plane-services/vanity-gateway/gateway_config/*, deploy/helm/vanity-gateway/*, tools/ci/helm-validate-values/vanity-gateway.yaml
The Vanity Gateway adds openai.decisions and typesafeSystemOne mappings, registers both routes, and includes the mappings in model lookup and discovery. Route-specific native errors and configuration validation are added.
Stargate proxy and authentication
src/libraries/rust/stargate/crates/proto/proto/llm_gateway.proto, src/libraries/rust/stargate/crates/stargate/src/*, src/libraries/rust/stargate/crates/stargate/tests/suite/proxy_contract.rs, src/libraries/rust/stargate/scripts/e2e-last-cluster.sh
Stargate adds POST proxy routes for both endpoints. The changes also add an invocation-auth RPC used by the decision-route integration script, which checks request forwarding and backend error responses.
Mock backends and validation
examples/function-samples/openai-compatible-sample/*, src/libraries/rust/stargate/crates/mock-dynamo/*, tests/bdd/*
The sample server and mock Dynamo add canned route responses. BDD scenarios cover LLM Gateway and Vanity Gateway routing, route-specific model availability, response forwarding, and error behavior.

The decision-route changes look sound, with only minor follow-ups. Fix the metrics documentation so the label sets match what the gateway emits, and tighten one test so it actually exercises the response-peek logic. Live BDD and staging checks are still pending, as the PR notes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes implement the coding objectives in [#2921] and [#2922]. The LLM API gateway, Stargate, Vanity Gateway, mock backends, and sample backend register both POST routes. The implementation routes by model, enforces per-route URI enablement, preserves request and backend response bodies, forwards image headers, estimates input tokens, emits native gateway errors, and adds observability. Tests and BDD wiring cover routing, isolation, passthrough, errors, metering metadata, model discovery, image bodies, and both direct and LLM Gateway paths. Documentation covers configuration and usage. The unrun live BDD and staging checks do not remove the implemented coding coverage.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#2921] and [#2922]. Mock-engine and mock-dynamo updates, Stargate dev-auth support, protocol definitions, sample handlers, BDD harness changes, telemetry checks, chart validation, and documentation directly support route registration, per-route enablement, passthrough fidelity, testing, or configuration. No implementation adds extraction routes, unversioned aliases, format translation, or unrelated product behavior.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 31.75% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 126 functions across 50 files. (34 skipped: 23 unsupported, 11 over the file limit.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Make TestBackendErrorPeekDoesNotBufferBody exercise the peek.

The test uses http.StatusBadRequest. bareRouterErrorStatuses does not contain 400. As a result, isBackendErrorOnDecisionRoute returns true before it calls emptyBody, and counter.read stays 0. The assertions "the peek must read at most one byte" and "the peeked byte must not be lost" therefore pass without running the prefixedBody restore path. A regression that drops the peeked byte on a non-empty 502/503/504 backend error would still pass.

Use a status from bareRouterErrorStatuses so that emptyBody reads one byte and must put it back.

Proposed fix
-	resp := &provider.ProxyResponse{StatusCode: http.StatusBadRequest, Header: http.Header{}, Body: io.NopCloser(counter)}
+	resp := &provider.ProxyResponse{StatusCode: http.StatusBadGateway, Header: http.Header{}, Body: io.NopCloser(counter)}

 	require.True(t, isBackendErrorOnDecisionRoute(resp))
-	require.LessOrEqual(t, counter.read, 1, "the peek must read at most one byte")
+	require.Equal(t, 1, counter.read, "the peek must read exactly one byte")

The empty-body rule no longer includes 400, so the peek test that used 400
returned before the peek ran and could not catch a lost byte. It now uses 502
and asserts exactly one byte is read.

The HTTP request metrics carry function_id, the active requests gauge has no
status label, and usage observations skip 2xx responses with no body. The
label rule now names function_id as the one ID used as a label. The American

Thanks for the review. The nitpick on TestBackendErrorPeekDoesNotBufferBody was right: 400 is no longer in the bare router status set, so the test never ran the peek. Fixed in 32af5b1 (502, exactly one byte read). The two afterwards spelling notes are fixed in b102813.

Superseded by the stacked pull requests requested in review: #2981 (llm-api-gateway), #2982 (Stargate and mock-dynamo), #2983 (vanity-gateway) and #2984 (sample backend, BDD and shared docs). The final tree is identical to this branch. Closing in favor of the stack; the branch stays for reference.
