feat(examples): serve decision routes in the OpenAI-compatible sample, with BDD scenarios and docs - #2984
Adds /v1/decisions and /v1/systemone to the OpenAI-compatible sample backend, BDD scenarios for both routes through the LLM gateway and the vanity gateway, and the user documentation for the feature.
This is part 4 of 4 stacked pull requests. Merge order: 1 llm-api-gateway (#2981), 2 Stargate and Pylon (#2982), 3 vanity-gateway (#2983), 4 this one. It supersedes #2965.
Additional Details
Sample backend. Both routes return canned answers that follow the public LiteLLM and System One docs. Every successful response has an echo object with selected request headers, the body length and SHA-256, and credentials_received (true when Authorization, X-Api-Key, Proxy-Authorization or Cookie arrived; values are never echoed). usage.input_tokens mirrors X-Input-Tokens. ?mock_error=429 and ?mock_error=400 return canned errors. A body that is not a JSON object, including null, gets 400. The two routes have a 16 MiB request limit; existing routes stay at 10 MiB. The title type is feat(examples) so the sample release is cut.
BDD. Two scenarios tagged @llm-function-type @llm-decision-routes: the LLM gateway, and Vanity direct and through the director. They are opt-in: TestSingleClusterHelmfile skips them unless SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE is set, so the pinned released stack keeps passing until the components are released and the pins move. The scenarios check 200 answers, the image and vendor headers, X-Input-Tokens reaching the backend, caller credentials not reaching it, an input_image data URL request, route isolation with native 404 shapes, and backend 429 and 400 passthrough on both gateways. The offline wiring test derives the fake's routes from the configuration the scenario writes, and fails the scenarios for 14 broken gateway behaviors.
Docs. The overview and self-managed pages describe the routes, the body and header handling, the token estimate, the 400 limits, the shared error code table, request size advice, and a Vanity mapping example. usePexec advice is scoped to non-LLM Vanity entries.
Assumptions to confirm:
The sample's answer shapes (choice probabilities as {value, probability} arrays for decisions and objects for System One; numeric scores).
The new sample tag exists only after this merges and the sample release runs; tests/bdd/README.md says how to build and import one from this branch for a live run.
Review round 1 changes: opt-in scenarios, metering, credential and image assertions, Vanity error passthrough, a configuration-derived fake, instructions in the examples, the documentation corrections, and the sample's null body handling.
For the Reviewer
tests/bdd/features/single-cluster-helmfile.feature (the two scenarios), tests/bdd/decision_routes_test.go (wiring), examples/function-samples/openai-compatible-sample/http-server/decisions.go, docs/overview/llm-gateway.md.
The closing keyword below fires only when this merges into main; this pull request is based on part 3, so #2921 may need to be closed by hand once the stack lands. #2922 stays open until the Vanity scenario runs live against a released chart with the new schema.
For QA
Ran, all passing: the sample's go vet and go test -count=1 ./...; in tests/bdd, go test -short ./...; git diff --check; fern check (0 errors). Each code fix has a test that failed first for the expected reason. golangci-lint reports one errcheck in tests/bdd/harness/suite_test.go, a file this pull request does not change.
Live BDD on a local k3d stack (Linux x86_64), with the gateway, Stargate and sample built from this stack (commit 1b4a6fb) and SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE set: the install, registration and gateway decision scenarios passed (4 scenarios, 160 steps), including the gateway-written 401 and 429, the image charge, the credential check and backend 429 and 400 passthrough.
Not run: the Vanity BDD scenario (it needs a released Vanity chart with the new schema, see part 3), and with it the direct path through the invocation service.
QA is needed: a staging smoke check once a model serves these routes.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Route contracts and configuration docs/overview/*, docs/self-managed/*, src/clis/nvcf-cli/*, examples/function-samples/openai-compatible-sample/README.md
Documents the beta routes, model URI configuration, request and response handling, error formats, and sample route behavior.
Sample decision-route server examples/function-samples/openai-compatible-sample/http-server/*
Registers both routes in the sample server. Adds canned answers, usage data, echo controls, request validation, route-specific errors, and tests for these behaviors.
Gateway scenarios and test wiring tests/bdd/*
Adds gateway and Vanity Gateway scenarios for routing, errors, and model discovery. Extends the HTTP test harness to capture and assert response headers, and documents scenario setup.
NVIDIA/nvcf#2981: Implements the decision routes that this pull request documents and tests through the sample backend, LLM Gateway, and Vanity Gateway.
Backend authors may misunderstand which model value they receive. Clarify the route table; the remaining risk is bounded and does not block merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The current head satisfies the coding requirements in #2921 and #2922. Existing commits in the merge-base history implement the LLM gateway routes, token estimation, native error handling, metrics, Stargate routing and mock coverage, and Vanity configuration, routing, model discovery, and error handling. This pull request adds the sample backend for both routes, route-specific responses and errors, image-sized request coverage, BDD scenarios for gateway and Vanity paths, response-header assertions, and the required route and configuration documentation. The BDD wiring test rejects broken routing, header, error, and model-discovery behavior. The author reports that the gateway scenario and offline tests pass. The Vanity live scenario was not run, but the scenario and wiring coverage are present.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within #2921 and #2922. The sample backend, BDD harness and scenarios, response-header support, and documentation directly support the decision-route implementation and its acceptance criteria. The changes do not add extraction routes, unversioned aliases, format translation, or unrelated product behavior.

Major: "Closes #2922" is not justified yet. The issue requires Vanity Gateway metering by request count and estimated input tokens, with an image rule. #2983 adds no token estimate or rate limiting to the Vanity Gateway, so direct (non-LLM) Vanity routes are not token metered; only the LLM director path is, through the LLM gateway. The Vanity BDD scenario has also never run (see the PR body), so the direct and director criteria are unverified. The gateway's input token estimate (#2981) can also be bypassed by adding a top-level "type":"input_image" field, which collapses the whole body to one flat image count. That is raised on #2981 and further weakens the metering criterion. Suggest "Relates to #2922" plus follow-up issues, or finish those parts first.
Major: the PR title type test: hides a sample feature. The sample is a semantic-release subproject (tools/ci/github-release-subprojects.json), and its history uses feat(examples):. Squashed as test:, no new sample version is cut, so SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE stays on :local indefinitely. Suggest feat(examples): ..., or split the sample into its own feat PR.
Minor: the closing keywords will not fire. The base is a stack branch, not main, and GitHub currently links no closing issues. Retarget to main before merge, or close the issues by hand once the whole stack lands.

feat(examples): serve decision routes in the OpenAI-compatible sample, with BDD scenarios and docs

@FamousDirector on "Closes #2922": I switched it to "Relates to #2922". Isn't the rate-limit criterion for #2921 only? Vanity has no limiter, and metering happens in the LLM gateway on the director path. Do you want a follow-up issue for Vanity direct-path metering? Thanks
Add POST /v1/decisions and POST /v1/systemone with canned answers in each route's shape, so BDD and smoke tests can use the sample as a decision model backend.
Each response carries an echo object with selected request headers and the body length, and sets x-mock-echo-typesafe-danger-zone-images, so a test can prove the headers arrived. x_load_tester_echo returns the request body. The routes have their own 16 MiB request limit (an 8 MB image is about 10.7 MB as base64); existing routes keep 10 MiB. ?mock_error=429 and ?mock_error=400 return backend-style errors for passthrough tests.

…estion shapes
Parse questions tolerantly so object choices, levels, criteria, box questions, images and assets never cause a 400. Answers now carry name, probabilities, confidence, box and legend as each question type requires.

…ne response types
Use separate response types per route. Decisions returns typed choice values, probability lists, numeric scores and detailed usage. System One returns keyed probabilities, a legend object and input and output usage only.

The decision route scenarios must show that a backend 429 keeps its Retry-After header through the gateways. The HTTP client recorded only status and body, so no step could read a response header. Record the headers and add one step that compares a header value.

Both routes are passthrough on the LLM gateway and the Vanity Gateway, so a regression would show only on a live request. Add two @llm-decision-routes scenarios: one through the LLM gateway (answers, vendor header echo, per-model route isolation with native 404 shapes, backend 429 and 400 passthrough) and one through the Vanity Gateway (direct and LLM director models, cross-section 404s, /v1/models supported_endpoints).
The released sample image does not serve the routes yet, so the scenarios read SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE, which defaults to the :local sample, and leave SAMPLE_LLM_ECHO_IMAGE alone. A wiring test runs both scenarios against a fake gateway and checks that nine broken gateway behaviors fail them.

The overview, the self-managed pages and the nvcf-cli docs list the new beta
routes, how a function declares them in uris when it is created, the token
estimate, the error shapes, the usePexec limit and the metric. They describe
the whole feature, so they land with the last change in the stack.

A null body decoded into the request struct without error and returned
200, although the README documents a 400 for any body that is not a JSON
object. A valid object with a non-string model got the message "request
body must be a JSON object". Decode to a raw value first, require an
object, and name the field when a known field has the wrong type.

…n routes
Gateways must not forward the caller's Authorization, X-Api-Key,
Proxy-Authorization or Cookie to a decision backend. The echo object now
carries credentials_received, a boolean, so an end-to-end test can prove
the strip. Header values are never echoed.
The README now says the echo object is on successful responses only,
that usage.input_tokens mirrors X-Input-Tokens, and links the LLM Gateway
guide at its current path.

TestSingleClusterHelmfile defaulted SAMPLE_LLM_DECISIONS_IMAGE, so the
scenarios' environment guard never skipped and a run against the pinned
released stack failed both scenarios with 404s. The live entry point now
excludes @llm-decision-routes unless the operator sets the variable, and a
wiring test proves the scenarios run no commands when it is unset.
The README no longer names a released sample version.

…tion
The wiring fake hardcoded which routes each model serves, so a typo in the
Vanity mapping the scenario writes, or in a function's --llm-model uris,
still passed offline. The fake now reads the created functions'
--llm-model options and the Vanity mapping in the Helmfile environment,
and a new wiring test breaks each of them and expects the feature to
fail.

…y error passthrough
The decision scenarios now check what reached the sample backend through
the LLM gateway: X-Input-Tokens is at least 1 and the caller's API key was
not forwarded (echo.credentials_received is false). One request carries a
small inline PNG as an input_image data URL. The Vanity scenario adds
mock_error 400 and 429 requests on both routes for the direct and LLM
models and checks status, Retry-After and body. Decision questions use
instructions, as real backends expect.
The wiring fake gains a broken mode for each new assertion.

Decision requests are forwarded unchanged except for the model value, and
the guide now says so in the endpoint table, the forwarding list and the
enablement page. It also documents what the gateway rejects (64-level
nesting, duplicate case-variant model keys), that caller credentials and
request router control headers are not forwarded, the exact image rules of
the token estimate, the request size advice, the canonical error code table
and the empty-body status exception for older request router builds.
The example question uses instructions, as real decision backends expect.
usePexec advice is scoped to direct Vanity Gateway entries, since
functionType LLM entries reject it, and the guide adds a Vanity Gateway
mapping example for the decisions and typesafeSystemOne sections.

Then the HTTP response JSON field {string} should be less than {int}
compares a numeric response field with an exclusive upper bound, so a
scenario can show one request meters fewer tokens than another.
Signed-off-by: Sachin Prabhakar <saprabhakar@nvidia.com>
…n charge
The LLM gateway decision scenario now sends an invalid API key on both
routes and expects a 401 with code invalid_api_key in the route's native
shape, with a matching request_id on System One. A third model,
bdd-decision-limited, declares tokenRateLimit=1-W, so its first request on
either route gets a gateway 429 with code rate_limit_exceeded in the native
shape.
The inline image request must now meter at least 1024 tokens, the default
image charge, and the same request without the image must meter fewer.
The wiring fake returns native gateway errors, enforces the declared token
rate limit and estimates image tokens. New broken modes for a non-native
401 or 429, an unenforced limit, and an image metered as 1 token each make
the feature fail.
