Summary

  • When Podcast Index gives a show a new number (details asked for the old show ID answer with another show ID for the same feed), boxlore now records the renumbering and treats both numbers as one show: one follow, one page, and the listening done under the old number counts on the new show's episodes.
  • No stored episode ID is re-keyed and the database schema is unchanged (Room stays at version 39).

Motivation

  • Opening a followed show whose Podcast Index number had changed showed Subscribe and the "Missing episodes?" offer, because the page switched to the new number and only checked the follow under that number. Tapping Subscribe created a second follow, which cloud sync then carried everywhere.
  • Episodes played under the old number did not show as played on the new show's page, since their history rows sat under the old show and were never linked to the new show's catalog.
  • The renumbered page also never took its artwork colours.

What changed

  • Detection (:core:catalog, :core:rss). PodcastRepository reports every details answer for a canonical numeric show ID that names another one, before the answer is returned, so every existing details call (show page, cloud pull enrichment, address recovery) detects it. The record lives in a new SharedPreferences file boxlore_renumbered_shows (old ID -> new ID), added to the stable storage names in ARCHITECTURE.md. Shows are never matched by title, and rss: shows are never touched.
  • One follow (RenumberedShowFollows, RenumberedFollowMerge, PodcastDao.moveRenumberedFollow). A follow of the old show moves to the new show in one transaction: notifications and auto-download stay on if either follow had them, genre/icon/sort/trims are kept, folder memberships, Home pins and manual order move. The old show is unfollowed like any unfollow. Both rows are marked dirty so the next push carries the follow and the unfollow, and a later pull of the old follow loses to the newer unfollow. The new show keeps its own follow time or takes the time of the move, never the old earlier time, so an unfollow made since on another device is not overridden. Notifications for the new show are marked pending through the existing registration journal before they are turned on, so they are never dropped.
  • Existing duplicates. Each foreground pass first moves follows recorded as renumbered, then asks details only for followed shows that share a feed address or podcast GUID with another follow (at most six per pass, each once per process after an answer), so already-duplicated follows collapse without any action from the listener.
  • Listening (RenumberedShowLinker, LocalEpisodeCatalogRepository). On every catalog read of the new show, the old show's history, queue and download rows (which keep their IDs and show) join the new show's episodes by exact audio address (queue/download rows also by title and a close date) when the match is unique, recorded as trusted non-owner aliases with provenance renumbered_show_match. Ambiguous matches and IDs held by a catalog row are left alone.
  • Show page (:feature:info). A route recorded as renumbered opens as the new show and moves a follow still under the old number. The page counts as followed when the shown show, the route's show or any show renumbered into it is followed, so Subscribe is never offered for the new show while the old one is followed, and "Missing episodes?" follows the followed path. ArtworkInfoTheme now accepts the show the page resolved to for its route while still ignoring a podcast left over from a previous route. The toggle passes the state it showed, so Subscribe moves the old follow and Unfollow ends both.
  • Docs: docs/EPISODE_IDS.md (Renumbered shows), ARCHITECTURE.md, and the READMEs of :app, :core:catalog, :core:database, :core:rss and :feature:info.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Before: a renumbered followed show showed Subscribe, offered "Missing episodes?", could be followed twice, lost its played state on the new number, and had no artwork colours.
  • After: one follow under the new number with merged settings, played episodes from the old number show as played, the page is followed and coloured whichever number opened it.
  • No episode, history, queue, download or alias ID changes. rss: and negative IDs are untouched. No Room schema change or migration. Cloud sync uses the existing dirty/push paths; older builds that re-follow the old number get collapsed again on the next foreground pass of this build.

Listener impact

What changes in the user's life:

  • A followed show whose catalog number changed no longer looks unfollowed, no longer shows up twice in Library, and keeps the episodes you already played marked as played.

Backend

CHANGELOG.md (required developer copy)

Fixed

  • A Podcast Index show that answers under a new show ID is recorded in boxlore_renumbered_shows and treated as one show: its follow moves to the new ID with merged settings (synced as a follow plus an unfollow, notifications through the pending registration journal), existing duplicate follows collapse on the next foreground pass, the old show's history, queue and download rows link to the new show's episodes without re-keying any ID, and PodcastInfoScreen counts either follow and takes the resolved show's artwork colours.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

Fixes

  • Shows that changed their catalog number stay followed once: no more Subscribe button or duplicate follow for a show you already follow, and the episodes you played before the change stay marked as played.

Test plan

  • ./gradlew :core:database:testDebugUnitTest :core:rss:testDebugUnitTest :core:catalog:testDebugUnitTest :feature:info:testDebugUnitTest :app:testDebugUnitTest :app:compileDebugKotlin detekt pass locally
  • RenumberedShowRoomTest (Robolectric Room): old show history with unresolved aliases and no catalog rows, new show catalog under recipe IDs; the new show's episodes read completed and no catalog or history row changes ID or show
  • RenumberedShowFollowsTest, RenumberedFollowMergeTest, PodcastRepositoryRenumberingTest: both shows followed collapse into one with notifications on and a pending registration; sync pulls do not undo the move; lookalike titles and rss: shows are never merged
  • RenumberedShowPageLogicTest and PodcastInfoAdaptiveTransitionTest: the renumbered page stays followed (never Subscribe) and coloured across every window gate and recreation
  • Built / installed locally (./gradlew installDebug) and opened a renumbered followed show on a phone
  • Manual check on a tablet, in split screen and across a fold change
  • Required checks are green before merge

Notes (optional)

  • Manual acceptance: follow a show whose Podcast Index number changed and open it from Library. Expect Subscribed, artwork colours, no "Missing episodes?" offer, one Library entry, and earlier played episodes shown as played once the page has read the feed. Unfollow from the page: the show leaves Library and no second follow appears. Repeat on a tablet, split screen and across a fold change.
  • Adaptive coverage is JVM-level (ViewModel/logic and transition gates); no device evidence is attached yet.

When show details for a Podcast Index show ID answer with another show
ID, the app now records the renumbering (boxlore_renumbered_shows) and
keeps one follow under the new ID: settings merge, both rows go out with
the next sync push, notifications move through the pending registration
journal, and folders, pins and the manual order follow. The foreground
pass collapses existing duplicates that share a feed address.

The old show's history, queue and download rows keep their IDs and join
the new show's episodes as trusted aliases on each catalog read, so
played episodes show as played. The show page opens the old route as the
new show, counts either follow, and takes the new show's artwork colours.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Podcast Index shows with updated IDs now resolve to the current show, and existing follows and preferences carry over.
    • Follow status and show artwork remain consistent when opening a show through its former ID.
    • Listening history, likes, and queued or downloaded episode records remain associated with their existing episode IDs while being linked to matching episodes in the current show.
    • Subscription sync can detect and consolidate duplicate follows for renumbered shows, including when a feed address check confirms a show merge.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on show ID changes and how follow and listening data are handled.

The change adds persistent tracking for Podcast Index show-ID renumberings. It migrates eligible follows, links matching listener records without rewriting stored episode IDs, and resolves show-page state and artwork across old and current IDs. RSS shows are excluded.

core/catalog/.../RenumberedFollowMerge.kt, core/catalog/.../RenumberedShowFollows.kt, core/catalog/.../SubscriptionRepository.kt, core/catalog/.../SubscriptionForegroundSync.kt, related tests and documentation
Eligible follows move transactionally, with settings and related state merged according to the stored rows. Foreground sync checks known mappings and up to six shared-feed candidates. Toggle handling accounts for former IDs and RSS-linked follows.
Listener-record linking
core/rss/.../RenumberedShowLinker.kt, core/rss/.../LocalEpisodeCatalogRepository.kt, core/database/..., related tests and documentation
Catalog reads and explicit link calls connect eligible former-show listener IDs to uniquely matched current-show episodes through trusted aliases. History, queue, download, and catalog episode IDs remain unchanged.
Renumbered show-page state
feature/info/..., docs/EPISODE_IDS.md, related tests and documentation
The show page tracks route and displayed IDs. It recognizes follow state across those IDs, can reload details under a resolved ID, and selects artwork for the resolved show.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows Conventional Commits with the type "fix" and scope "catalog", and it is 63 characters long. It states the main change: a show that Podcast Index renumbered is now treated as one show. The changeset adds renumbering detection, follow merging, listener-row linking, and show-page handling, and the title covers the core intent, though the scope is narrower than the many modules touched.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is closely related to the changeset. It explains the renumbered-show problem, the new SharedPreferences file, RenumberedShowFollows and RenumberedFollowMerge, the listener-row linking in RenumberedShowLinker, the show-page changes, and the docs and tests. It also lists the test plan, impact, and release copy.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

The changed production imports stay within the existing architecture: feature:info adds only same-feature logic and core imports; no feature-to-feature imports or PostHog imports were added. The diff adds no Hilt, Koin, Dagger, MockK, PlaybackRepository, or second AppContainer graph. Catalog additions use database, model, prefs, domain, and RSS types, with no designsystem or playback dependency. The new renumbering storage uses the documented boxlore_renumbered_shows file through the single AppContainer; database changes are projection/DAO/API additions and a provenance constant, with no Room entity, schema version, or migration change.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

Every changed production Kotlin module has its matching README.md modified in the PR: app, core/catalog, core/database, core/network, core/rss, and feature/info. The PR is not test-only, but it satisfies the README requirement for all affected modules.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR adds substantial production logic and also adds focused JVM tests under src/test. Coverage includes PodcastRepository renumbering detection and callback failure, follow merging and idempotency, RSS/non-renumbering exclusions, retry and lookup limits, Room listener linking and empty/no-record cases, persisted ID mappings, and ViewModel/page logic. The tests use JUnit, Robolectric, in-memory Room, MockWebServer, and fakes. No changed tests are under src/androidTest.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

One current review finding remains outstanding: the Major finding in RenumberedShowFollows.kt (lines 365-367) is not resolved or explicitly dismissed. The ten previously posted threads are marked discussion=resolved, but the new finding still violates the check.

Resolution

Fix the RSS follow lookup so both isFollowedAsShown and movedRows select an active subscribed RSS row, or explicitly dismiss the finding with a short rationale. Mark the finding resolved before merge.

If the process stops after podcastDao.moveRenumberedFollow, the old row is already unsubscribed. The next adoption returns without moving its folder memberships, Home pins, manual order, or catalog state. A caught effect failure has the same result. Persist a pending move and replay its idempotent effects until they finish. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
