Genres only come from Hardcover today, so books Hardcover doesn't know (many German and Japanese titles, in my library) never get any, and a client can't fill them in.
This lets PUT /api/v1/documents/{document}/info take genres as well:
{"genres": ["Fantasy", "Heist"]} stores them. Names are trimmed and de-duplicated; up to 10 names of at most 64 characters each.
Genres set this way stick: when the background enricher looks the book up on Hardcover, it still fills moods, series and the rest, but leaves the genres alone. This follows how manual covers and page counts already work.
{"genres": null} hands them back to Hardcover: the book is looked up again on the next enrichment pass.
Merging two documents carries the genres over. Genres set by hand win over Hardcover's; otherwise the kept document's stay.
A new column, documents.genres_manual (migration 0033), marks genres set by hand. The response now also returns title, author and genres. The API docs are updated.
My use case: importing reading history from Goodreads and filling in genres from Goodreads shelves for books Hardcover misses.
Testing: test/manual-genres.test.ts fakes Hardcover's search and covers validation, the book list, a Hardcover lookup leaving manual genres alone, and clearing back to Hardcover's. Without the change in cover.ts, the lookup step fails the test. The full suite passes (676 tests) and so does tsc --noEmit.
Example:
This is a nature documentary book and it is classified as young adult, adventure and classics. This is obviously wrong.
A manual update would also later make manual overrides possible in client apps, not only for scripts like mine.
The document-info endpoint now accepts and returns genre lists. It stores whether genres were set manually. Hardcover enrichment preserves manual genres until they are cleared.

Summary
Genre API and stored state migrations/0033_manual_genres.sql, src/routes/v1/documents.ts, docs/API.md
The endpoint validates, trims, deduplicates, stores, and returns genres. Setting genres marks them manual. Clearing them resets the manual flag and Hardcover check timestamp. The migration adds the flag, and the API docs describe the request and response.
Hardcover preservation and validation src/models/cover.ts, test/manual-genres.test.ts
Hardcover enrichment retains genres marked manual. Tests cover invalid input, normalization, preservation through enrichment and a page-count edit, and clearing genres to allow lookup results again.

Manual genres can be lost when documents are merged. This is a localized risk that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

genres and genres_manual from the alias, and its ON CONFLICT update fills those
fields only when the canonical document has no genres, preserving existing
canonical genres and their manual flag.

The kept copy's value now wins whenever it was set by hand, even empty.
Before, a list cleared on purpose took the other copy's Hardcover list
and kept the manual flag, so the lookup's values ended up frozen. The
genre merge from crosspoint-reader#35 had the same gap.
