docs: disambiguate concern Octad from VeriSimDB's Octad and Tier 2 overlays - #217
the six overlay modalities VeriSimiser projects entities into (graph, vector, tensor, semantic, document, spatial)
"the Octad" — six members, and upstream's Temporal/Provenance are Tier 1 concerns here
Enabled overlays
per-manifest selection from the six (0–6)
a versioned "modality profile"
On "modality profile" — not adopted
verisimdb#299 defines it as a versioned, implementation-specific selection of supported modalities with explicit cardinality. Tier2Config is unversioned enablement booleans over a fixed six-member support set, with derived/undeclared cardinality. That is a selection, not a profile, and naming it one would recreate the ambiguity ADR-0004 removed. Docs use overlay modality set / enabled overlays and reserve the profile term for upstream. ADR-0014 §14.5 records the criterion-by-criterion test, and notes that adopting a real profile is a manifest-schema change needing its own compatibility ADR.
Manifest configuration review (doc bugs fixed, no renames)
The README previously documented the legacy[verisimiser]/[tier1]/[tier2] shape as if it were canonical — and got it wrong:
[tier1] was shown with lineage, constraints, access-control, keys Tier1Config does not have (silently ignored on parse);
[tier1.provenance], [tier1.temporal], [tier2.vector] are nested tables over bool fields — a parse error;
the runtime never reads [tier1]/[tier2] at all; only [octad]/[sidecar]/[retention] drive behaviour.
Canonical [project]/[database]/[octad]/[sidecar]/[retention] is now shown first; the legacy block is shown accurately and labelled parsed-but-inert, plus backend vs target-db conflict behaviour and the [retention] keys.
Tier 2 docs
six-member set, membership fixed by Tier2Config; adding an overlay is an ontology change needing an ADR, not a config edit;
per-manifest flags are an enabled-overlay selection (0–6), all default false;
status called out: src/tier2/mod.rs is stubs; [tier2] flags are parsed but inert — no overlay DDL, index, or query routing ships yet.
Files
docs/decisions/0014-modality-vocabulary.adoc (new) — extends ADR-0004, does not supersede it
addenda/pointers in 0004-octad-ontology.adoc and the legacy ADR-0001-octad-ontology.adoc
src/ — comments and help strings only: OctadDimension doc comment, tier2/mod.rs header, verisimiser octad help text and banner ("VeriSimiser Octad: Eight Concerns", previously mislabelled "VeriSimDB Octad")
Compatibility
No manifest key, CLI flag/subcommand, type name, or verisimdb_* table is renamed (OctadConfig, Tier2Config, OctadDimension, [octad], [tier1], [tier2], enable-*, octad subcommand all unchanged). Any rename stays a separate compatibility decision, per ADR-0014 §14.6.
Verification
All touched .adoc files render with Asciidoctor (Node port, npx asciidoctor@3) with no new warnings; the pre-existing level 0 sections notice on ADR files comes from the repo's markdown-style # N. Title convention and is unchanged in kind.
Rendered README: the vocabulary table has 5 data rows × 3 cells, and all three internal xrefs (octad-vocabulary, sidecar-storage, tier-2-augmentation-layer) resolve.
No Rust build run: cargo is not installed in this sandbox. src/ changes are comments/doc-comments and two user-visible strings, with no signature, type, or field changes.
…erlays
Add ADR-0014 (modality vocabulary) and align the docs with it:
* unqualified "Octad" is VeriSimiser's fixed eight-concern model
(`OctadDimension`); upstream is always "VeriSimDB's Octad" (its named
eight-modality API/model)
* Tier 2 is a fixed six-member overlay modality set, not an octad;
upstream's Temporal/Provenance modalities are Tier 1 concerns here
* "modality profile" is not adopted: verisimdb#299 defines it as a
versioned, implementation-specific selection with explicit
cardinality, which the unversioned `[tier2]` booleans are not.
Docs use "enabled overlays" for the per-manifest selection.
Manifest review fixes (docs only, no field renames):
* README documented the legacy `[verisimiser]`/`[tier1]`/`[tier2]`
shape as canonical, including `[tier1]` keys that `Tier1Config` does
not have and nested `[tier1.provenance]`/`[tier2.vector]` tables that
fail to parse. Canonical `[project]`/`[database]`/`[octad]`/
`[sidecar]`/`[retention]` now comes first; the legacy shape is shown
accurately and marked parsed-but-inert.
* README now states that Tier 2 overlays are stubs and `[tier2]` flags
are not yet acted on.
Comment/help-text only in src/ (`OctadDimension` doc comment,
`tier2/mod.rs` header, `verisimiser octad` help and banner) -- no
schema, CLI, or manifest field is renamed.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified the distinction between VeriSimiser’s eight-concern Octad, VeriSimDB’s eight-modality Octad and Tier 2’s six overlay modalities.
Explained how manifests select overlays, which default to disabled, and noted that Tier 2 functionality is currently stubbed.
Updated terminology and guidance across the README, roadmap, architecture documents and decisions.
Style
Updated the Octad command’s description and output label to identify VeriSimiser’s eight concerns.
This change aligns terminology across the manifest description, ADRs, source comments, README, and project documentation. It distinguishes VeriSimiser’s fixed eight-concern Octad from VeriSimDB’s eight-modality Octad, defines six Tier 2 overlay modalities, and documents per-manifest selection and the current stub status.
Changes: Octad and Tier 2 vocabulary alignment
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define the Octad and overlay terms 0-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml, docs/decisions/*, README.adoc, src/abi/mod.rs, src/tier2/mod.rs
The manifest description, ADRs, README, and source comments distinguish the concern Octad from VeriSimDB’s Octad. They describe Tier 2 as six overlay modalities, with manifests selecting enabled overlays rather than a versioned modality profile.
Update manifest and user-facing descriptions README.adoc, src/main.rs
The README describes Tier 2 selection, drift terminology, current and legacy manifest sections, and the stated status of Tier 2 stubs. The Octad command output is labelled as VeriSimiser’s eight concerns.
Align architecture and contributor guidance CONTRIBUTING-DEV.adoc, CHANGELOG.adoc, ROADMAP.adoc, TOPOLOGY.adoc, docs/architecture/*
These documents apply the updated terms to contributor guidance, project status, module descriptions, and the VeriSimDB dependency description.
Correct the misleading legacy, Tier 2, and detector-coverage descriptions before relying on the documentation.

Explanation
The description clearly explains the purpose, scope, compatibility impact, changed files, and verification. It does not use every template heading or include the checklist, but it is substantially complete and relevant.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #213 asks for documentation that separates VeriSimiser's fixed eight-concern Octad, VeriSimDB's Octad, and the selectable Tier 2 overlays, in the README, ADR, and manifest docs. It also asks that schema and CLI names stay unchanged. The PR meets these requirements.
Evidence:
ADR-0014 (docs/decisions/0014-modality-vocabulary.adoc, new) defines the three models. It fixes the six-member overlay set (graph, vector, tensor, semantic, document, spatial) and the enabled-overlay selection (0–6, each flag defaulting to false). This covers the membership and cardinality the issue asks for.
The README vocabulary table, Tier 2 section, and manifest section show the canonical shape first. They state that the legacy [tier1]/[tier2] shape is parsed but inert.
src/tier2/mod.rs (head) states that the overlay set is fixed at six, is not the Octad, and is not a versioned modality profile. It also states that the overlays are stubs and [tier2] flags are parsed but inert.
The src/main.rs octad help text (head) now reads 'Show the eight concerns of the Octad and which tiers they belong to.' This is a help-string change only.
The issue says 'consider' for 'modality profile'. The PR does not adopt the term. It records the criterion-by-criterion rationale in ADR-0014 §14.5 and in the PR description. The issue does not require adoption, so this does not fail the requirement.
No renames of manifest keys, types, or CLI subcommands appear in the reviewed changes.
Limits: The README, ADR, and banner text were assessed from the PR summary and the head source. The 'VeriSimiser Octad: Eight Concerns' banner in src/main.rs print_octad was not read directly, because the file read was truncated.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files relate to the vocabulary and manifest documentation that issue #213 requests, or to the source comments and help strings that carry the same terms.
Documentation: README.adoc, CONTRIBUTING-DEV.adoc, ADR-0004 addendum, ADR-0001 legacy addendum, TOPOLOGY.adoc (both copies), ROADMAP.adoc, CHANGELOG.adoc, 0-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml. Each applies the Octad, VeriSimDB Octad, or overlay terminology, or corrects the manifest shape documented in the README.
Source: src/abi/mod.rs, src/tier2/mod.rs, and src/main.rs. These changes are comments, doc comments, and help or banner strings only. The PR summary reports no signature, type, or field changes.
docs/architecture/THREAT-MODEL.adoc: the drift-detection claim changes from 'proofs verify all modalities are checked' to 'proofs cover detector invariants, and the taxonomy is exhaustive over eight categories'. This is a claim correction tied to the concern-Octad terminology. It is not a vocabulary-only edit, so a reviewer should confirm the wording against the Idris2 ABI proofs. This uncertainty does not show unrelated work.
No unrelated feature or behaviour change appears in the reviewed summary.

Update the stdout acceptance test for the renamed banner
The new banner makes tests/logging_test.rs::octad_table_is_data_on_stdout fail: its assertion at line 41 still requires stdout to contain "VeriSimDB Octad", which this command no longer prints. .github/workflows/rust-ci.yml runs this test through cargo test --all-targets --no-fail-fast, so the change breaks the test job. Update the assertion to match the intended terminology while retaining the stdout check.
The `octad` data-output assertion pinned "VeriSimDB Octad", which is the
upstream modality model's name. The banner now reads "Verisimiser Octad:
Eight Concerns" per ADR-0014; keep the stdout-data contract, update the
substring.

Do not present the eight-category taxonomy as an effective mitigation yet.
Only the Temporal detector ships; the other seven categories remain planned. An exhaustive list of categories does not prevent false negatives in categories without detectors. State the current coverage and describe broader detection as planned.

Describe legacy manifests as parseable, not operationally compatible.
Legacy sections still parse, but their settings do not drive runtime behaviour, as Lines 357–359 explain. “Existing files keep working” can lead a reader to keep relying on ineffective settings. Say that existing files still load, but active settings must use the canonical sections.

Do not say that Tier 2 modalities ship.
Lines 267–271 state that the six overlay flags are inert and that overlay indexes and query routing do not ship. Change this claim to describe planned capability. Qualify the earlier claim at Lines 199–201 that enabling an overlay causes Constraints to report divergence.

…on main) (#218)
Follow-up to #217 (merged as 739afc4).
The previous commit changed the `verisimiser octad` banner to `===
VeriSimiser Octad: Eight Concerns ===` but asserted `"Verisimiser
Octad"` (lowercase `s`) in `tests/logging_test.rs`. The substring never
matches, so **cargo test (stable) / (1.85) fail on main**.
This corrects the assertion to the real string. Test intent is
unchanged: the `octad` table is data output on stdout, and the banner
names VeriSimiser's concern Octad rather than VeriSimDB's upstream
modality Octad (ADR-0014).
Only `tests/logging_test.rs` changes.

…template placeholders and phantom recipes) (#219)
Follow-up to #217 / #218, prompted by trying to follow the install
instructions in this repo.
## The problem
`QUICKSTART-DEV.adoc`, `QUICKSTART-USER.adoc`,
`QUICKSTART-MAINTAINER.adoc` and `docs/QUICKSTART.adoc` were **unfilled
RSR templates**. Following them produced:
* literal `{{LANG_STACK}}`, `{{BUILD_CMD}}`, `{{TEST_CMD}}`, `{{DEPS}}`,
`{{MUST_INVARIANTS}}` placeholders;
* `just setup`, `just setup-dev`, `just e2e`, `just check-error-codes`,
`just panic-scan`, `just llm-context`, `just build-release`, `just
stapeln-*`, `just uninstall` — **none of these recipes exist** (`just
--list` is the real set); there is also no error-code catalogue anywhere
in the tree;
* `just install --prefix=/usr/local` — the recipe takes no arguments;
* "Container (via Stapeln)" / `podman build` presented as working,
though `Containerfile` is a template with commented-out `TODO` build
steps and unreplaced metadata;
* `nix develop` though there is **no `flake.nix`**;
* the expected first-run output "Verisimiser started successfully." —
the CLI's `start` subcommand is a placeholder and prints nothing of the
kind.
## Fix
Rewritten from a clone of the repo, not from the template:
* **Setup** — `rustup --profile minimal` (that part of the instruction
was right) plus `rustup component add clippy rustfmt`, since `--profile
minimal` ships neither and `just quality` needs both. MSRV 1.85 /
edition 2024; `rusqlite` bundles SQLite, so a C compiler is required and
there is no `libsqlite3` runtime dep; `just` is optional (`cargo fetch`
instead of `just setup`).
* **Install** — `cargo install --path .` → `~/.cargo/bin/verisimiser`;
`cargo build --release` → `target/release/verisimiser`; `cargo install
--path . --root <prefix>` for a custom prefix. Notes that no release/tag
exists yet, so source build is the only route.
* **Test** — `just test`, the CI-parity form `cargo test --all-targets
--no-fail-fast`, and the real suite layout (5 files / 23 integration
tests / 146 unit `#[test]`s, CLI tests via `CARGO_BIN_EXE_verisimiser`).
Explicitly says there is no separate e2e command.
* **Maintainer** — packaging via `cargo install --root`, the fact that
exactly one file gets installed, no global/XDG config (the manifest path
*is* the config), multi-instance pattern, `gc`/`status --json` for
operations, and a "what is not packaging-ready" section.
* **Honest status** — Containerfile/devcontainer are template stubs, no
`flake.nix`, `guix.scm` is a dev shell pinned to 0.1.0 while
`Cargo.toml` is 0.2.0, Tier 2 is stubs, PostgreSQL runtime reads refuse.
## Guard against recurrence
* `scripts/check-doc-recipes.sh` + **`just doc-recipes`**: scans `.adoc`
code blocks for `just <name>` and fails on any recipe not defined in
`Justfile`/`*.just`. Sync-managed template artifacts that describe the
template's own recipes are reported and skipped rather than rewritten.
* `CONTRIBUTING-DEV.adoc` gains **"Commands in docs must exist"**, with
a non-recipe → real-alternative table and the rule from ADR-0002: fix
the docs, don't invent a recipe.
## Also
* `README.adoc` build section: `Containerfile` no longer described as
producing a working image, and "pre-built release binaries are
published" softened to "workflow exists; no release published yet".
* `TEST-NEEDS.adoc`: dropped the `/var/mnt/eclipse/repos/verisimiser`
path, refreshed counts, noted `proptest` is declared but unused and
`tests/fuzz/` is a placeholder.
* `llm-warmup-{dev,user}.adoc` and the `setup.sh` header no longer point
at `just setup`.
## Verification
* `just doc-recipes` → **passes**; confirmed it **fails** on a probe
file containing `just e2e` / `just check-error-codes`.
* All edited `.adoc` render with Asciidoctor with **zero warnings**
(Node `asciidoctor@3`); every table is well-formed.
* No Rust or workflow behaviour changed — `Justfile` gains one recipe,
`setup.sh` only a comment. `cargo` is unavailable in this sandbox, so
`cargo test` was not run locally; the earlier `cargo test` fix already
landed in #218 and main is green.
Deliberately **not** touched: the sync-managed template files
(`docs/RSR_OUTLINE.adoc`, `container/*`, `.machine_readable/**`) whose
stale recipe references belong upstream in `hyperpolymath/standards`.
