What

Add meili add indexes, meili update indexes and meili delete indexes, the write commands of the indexes resource.

Route Command
POST /indexes meili add indexes --id <index> [--primary-key <field>]
PATCH /indexes/{index_uid} meili update indexes --id <index> [--primary-key <field>] [--new-id <index>]
DELETE /indexes/{index_uid} meili delete indexes --id <index> --yes

With get indexes, already shipped, the CRUD of the resource is complete. compact indexes and swap indexes are deliberately out of this change and keep their rows in pnpm api:coverage.

Contract

  • The command name and flags derive from its routes by the naming rules of docs/contract/commands.md, and each route is reachable by a distinct set of flags, or the exception is recorded with its reason
  • Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts
  • The command never waits for a human: no prompt, no question, no $EDITOR; a delete command spreads BaseCommand.confirmFlags and its examples carry --yes
  • The command never speaks HTTP itself: the SDK or the generated client only, no fetch outside src/lib/clients/

The three rows were already in the table of commands.md; no exception was needed and none was added. --new-id is rule 5 applied: on update indexes the path parameter takes --id, so the uid of the body becomes --new-id, with the API spelling --uid as a hidden alias. add indexes accepts --uid on --id the same way.

Tests

  • --help snapshot added or updated on purpose
  • JSON output snapshot for one success case per route and one error case
  • Integration test added (Meilisearch API commands only)
  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally

pnpm test: 45 files, 333 tests. pnpm test:integration: 9 files, 32 tests against the local Meilisearch of docker-compose.yml.

The only snapshot updated outside the new commands is the meili schema index, which gains its three entries.

Simplicity

  • Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16)
  • Anything shared lives in src/lib/, is used by this command, and is named below

One shared piece: readJsonObjectBody in src/lib/input.ts, used by add indexes and update indexes. Both send a body whose fields are flags, so the body must be a JSON object; one that is not is cli_input_invalid, exit 2, before anything is sent. The body travels whole into the SDK call, so a field the command declares no flag for reaches the API, which refuses it rather than the CLI dropping it in silence. delete indexes does not use it: a DELETE route has no body.

Docs

  • docs/contract/ updated for every name, flag, variable or code this change adds or renames, or nothing to update
  • The ADRs that touch this change were read; what they decide still holds, or a new ADR says what changed
  • No accepted ADR was edited. A new ADR was added if a decision changed.

Nothing to update: the three commands and their flags were already described in commands.md, and no new error code, exit code or environment variable appears. ADR 0007 (--yes on delete) and ADR 0010 (the connection flags belong to the commands that connect) both hold as written.

Housekeeping

  • oclif.manifest.json regenerated
  • Changeset added, or the change is invisible to users of the package
  • New dependency justified below, or none added

No new dependency. The changeset line went into .changeset/first-version.md, the single changeset until the first release.

Notes for the reviewer

The three routes are asynchronous all the way, which is the interface decision worth your eyes. Creating an index that already exists, updating one that does not, and deleting one that does not all answer HTTP 202 with a task that then fails — never an HTTP 404 or 409, although the OpenAPI document declares a 404 on the PATCH and DELETE routes. So without --wait these commands exit 0 on an index that does not exist, and the failure only shows up in the task. The integration test of update indexes pins that down: exit 7, the failed task on stdout, cli_task_failed on stderr. The unit error snapshots use the authentication error instead of a 404, because that is the error the API actually produces before enqueuing.

One contract line was written and then withdrawn. The first draft added a bullet to the "Input" section of output.md: on a route whose body fields are flags, the body is a JSON object and an unflagged field travels to the API as it is. delete documents falsifies it — the body of its delete-batch route is legitimately an array, and --data 42 there answers cli_usage, not cli_input_invalid. Making the sentence true means changing delete documents, another resource and another pull request, so this change ships the behaviour without the promise. Say the word if you want the contract line and the delete documents alignment as a follow-up.

Two review findings were left for later, both test-only and both spanning the documents resource: get documents carries its own inline "the body must be an object" check with a route-specific hint that is better than the generic message, so it was not converted to the new helper; and the integration suite hand-rolls env and the Meilisearch client in each of its seven files, which wants a shared export in test/integration/meilisearch/setup.ts rather than a change made halfway here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added commands to create, update, and delete indexes, with options for index IDs, primary keys, and renaming indexes.
    • Index settings can be supplied as JSON data or from a file.
    • Added support for fetching documents with filters, selected fields, pagination, and request-body input.
    • Deleting an index requires explicit confirmation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved error reporting for invalid JSON input, including input that isn’t a JSON object.

`meili add indexes --id <index> [--primary-key <field>]` on `POST /indexes`,
`meili update indexes --id <index> [--primary-key <field>] [--new-id <index>]`
on `PATCH /indexes/{index_uid}`, and `meili delete indexes --id <index> --yes`
on `DELETE /indexes/{index_uid}`. With `get indexes`, already shipped, the CRUD
of the resource is complete; `compact indexes` and `swap indexes` stay out on
purpose and keep their rows in `pnpm api:coverage`.

`--new-id` is rule 5 of `commands.md` applied: on `update indexes` the path
parameter takes `--id`, so the `uid` of the body is `--new-id`, with the API
spelling `--uid` as a hidden alias. `add indexes` takes the API spelling the
same way, on `--id`.

The three routes are asynchronous all the way: an index that already exists, or
one that does not, comes back as HTTP 202 with a task that then fails, never as
an HTTP error. The integration test of `update indexes` pins that down, exit 7
with the failed task on stdout, because it is the first thing an agent gets
wrong.

`readJsonObjectBody` joins `src/lib/input.ts`, the one shared piece this change
needed: `add` and `update` send a body whose fields are flags, so the body must
be an object, and a body that is not one is `cli_input_invalid` before anything
is sent. The body travels whole, so a field with no flag reaches the API, which
refuses it rather than the CLI dropping it in silence.

Walkthrough

Adds CLI commands to create, update, and delete indexes. The commands accept index IDs, JSON body options, primary-key settings, and rename options as applicable, then pass task results to the task-output handler. The change also adds object-only JSON body parsing and command, integration, and input tests.

Regenerate oclif.manifest.json.

src/commands/add/documents.ts exists, but no src/commands/create/documents.ts exists. The manifest still publishes create:documents with relativePath create/documents.js. This stale entry makes meili schema advertise a command that has no implementation and fails the CI manifest-diff check.

Run pnpm gen:manifest and commit the result. The regenerated manifest must contain add:documents, delete:documents, and delete:indexes.

Source: Pipeline failures

…:documents

`oclif manifest` reads `dist/`, and `tsc` never removes an output whose source
is gone, so `dist/commands/create/documents.js` had survived the rename of the
verb `create` into `add` on my machine. Regenerating on that dirty tree put a
`create:documents` command back into the committed manifest and into the
`meili schema` snapshot, for a file that does not exist: the CI step "The
committed manifest must match the code" caught it, and CodeRabbit read the same
entry.

`rm -rf dist` then `pnpm gen:manifest`. The manifest now lists seventeen
commands, every one of them a file in `src/commands/`, and the schema snapshot
loses the five phantom examples it carried.
